Join us in Pasadena and start your new year in the most colorful way!"
The first Rose Parade, or the Tournament of Roses, was organized in 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena, California. This club wanted to promote California’s beautiful flowers and mild winter climate, encouraging people to visit the East Coast.
While their original idea was to decorate horse-drawn carriages with flowers, the floats soon became more elaborate, covered entirely with flowers, seeds, leaves, and other natural materials! More than 18 million flowers are used to create these floats each year!
The Tournament of Roses Parade has gained even more popularity since 1902 when it became affiliated with the annual Rose Bowl Game. Played between the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions, this football game is one of college football's most elite and historic games!
In Pasadena, this event has been a New Year's Day tradition for over a century! It takes place on January 1, except when the day falls on a Sunday—in which case, the parade is held on January 2.
The Pasadena Tournament of Roses is going to be spectacular! Pack your bags and be part of hundreds of thousands that line the Parade route!
The theme for this year's celebration is Best Day Ever!
The rose parade route begins at Orange Grove Blvd and Green Street intersection, with a flyover of U.S. Air Force bombers. The route is 5.5 miles long and turns east on Colorado Boulevard. Then, the parade turns north on Sierra Madre Boulevard, ending at Villa Street along this Blvd. After the parade, the floats will be displayed near the end of the route for two days, allowing spectators to see them up close for a small fee!
This route allows thousands of spectators to line the streets, especially along Colorado Blvd, known as a prime viewing area. Some spectators even camp out along the route overnight to secure the best spots!
You'll see many spirited marching bands, both local and international. Troops from Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, and many other countries travel to Pasadena to participate in this celebration! In addition to floats and marching bands, celebrity guests will bring energy to the event with their lively musical performances.
The exciting part of these festivities is the selection of the Queen of the Tournament of Roses. The Rose Queen is a cherished symbol of the Rose Parade and Pasadena's Tournament of Roses festivities. Selected each year from among local high school seniors in the Pasadena area, the Rose Queen leads the Rose Court, which includes six other princesses! Fun fact! The Rose Queen’s tiara is designed with roses, representing Pasadena’s "City of Roses" heritage, and is set with over 600 rhinestones! Imagine the honor of being selected as a Rose Queen!
For the Rose Parade on January 1, 2025, Pasadena’s early morning temperatures will be around 8-15°C (46-59°F), warming slightly as the day progresses. Afternoon highs will reach 18-20°C (64-68°F). Dress in layers for the chilly mornings, and enjoy this pleasant day!
If you're lining the streets, you can watch the parade for free! However, you can purchase tickets for a seat at grandstand locations at one of the three viewing areas here. The Rose Bowl Game also requires a ticket.
