Nice la Belle, the famous capital of the Côte d'Azur, is preparing a majestic carnival! Come and have a splendid time!
In 1294, Count Charles d'Anjou wrote that he visited Nice for “the joyous days of Carnival.” This mention of the festivities in Nice makes it the oldest carnival in the world!
In 1294, Count Charles d'Anjou documented his visit to Nice during "the joyous days of Carnival," marking one of the earliest recorded mentions of the event. This historical reference contributes to the Nice Carnival's reputation as one of the oldest in the world.
However, the modern version of the Nice Carnival dates back to 1873. The carnival started to include parades, competitions, masquerades, and floats! Three years later, in 1876, something wonderful was added to this event - Bataille de Fleurs or Flower battles.
During each unique flower battle, elaborately decorated floral floats parade along the Promenade des Anglais, as costumed performers throw flowers into the crowd, creating a cheerful and fragrant atmosphere. Mimosas, roses, lilies, carnations, and other flowers thrown at the spectators make a special souvenir to take home to this day.
This is France's most important winter event and the biggest carnival, gathering over 1 million visitors! Each year, this premier international carnival has a different theme. In 2025, the theme will be King of the Oceans!
The flower parades and other carnival parades will be held along Promenade des Anglais, while the other venues include Promenade du Paillon, Place Masséna, Théâtre de Verdure, and Cours Saleya.
Join us for this unmissable event from February 15 to March 2!
You’ll enjoy numerous parades along a scenic seaside boulevard with stunning Mediterranean views, which has hosted the Bataille de Fleurs for over a century. These festivities feature street art troupes and musical groups that bring energy and excitement to the parades!
At the Place Masséna, surrounded by distinctive red Italianate buildings and beautiful arcades, you can watch Illuminated Carnival Corso and experience the Lou Queernaval or Gay Carnival! Since this will be France’s first gay carnival, many people are expected to gather to support each other and show their solidarity, all dressed up in flamboyant costumes!
You'll find flower markets and local food stands at the Cours Saleya. Socca, Pissaladière, and Calissons are just some of the local delicacies you can treat yourself to!
There's also a Carnival Village, with themed art installations, interactive displays, and miniature versions of the parade floats decorated beautifully! This village also includes family-friendly carnival rides, small games, and activities for kids. The village has stalls serving snacks, sweets, and drinks so you and your kids can refresh!
Expect cool and unpredictable weather. Daytime highs will range from about 9.4°C to 13°C (around 48-55°F), while nights will drop to 5.5°C (42°F). Dress in layers and bring an umbrella in case of rain!
Tickets will soon be available, and you can purchase them here. Some events, like Lou Queernaval, will be free to attend, and access to the Carnival Village is also free.
