The joy will fill your heart as you wander the streets of the Alsatian capital during its sparkling Christmas Market!
Strasbourg's Christmas market dates back to 1570, making it the oldest Christmas market in France and one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. The essential symbol of 'Strasbourg, Christmas Capital' is also the tallest-decorated Christmas tree in Europe!
There are several markets in this city of half-timbered houses, each with its unique atmosphere. Strasbourg Christmas markets are located in the city center, around Place Broglie, Place de la Cathédrale, Quai des Délices, and Place Kléber, and extend to other nearby squares - Place Benjamin Zix, Place Saint-Thomas, and Place du Temple Neuf.
The Strasbourg Christmas Market runs from November 27 to December 27, so you have plenty of time to visit each of Strasbourg's Christmas markets!
Expect festive sights, sounds, and flavors!
Christmas decorations, lights, and a huge Christmas tree create magnificent surroundings, while live music performances and choirs add to the magical atmosphere. The streets are beautifully decorated, and the smell of spices travels through the air while you listen to Christmas carols from churches. Visitors can buy original gifts and, in addition to that, sample traditional treats!
Be prepared to taste delicious food and drinks! You'll get to try traditional Alsatian dishes such as tarte flambée, choucroute (sauerkraut), and various cheeses. After that, you can enjoy sweet treats like gingerbread (pain d’épices), little Christmas biscuits called bredele, and the famous Alsatian pretzels. And what's better than a warm drink in cold weather? Warm up with a cup of Vin Chaud (a spiced mulled wine) or hot chocolate! Or why not try hot apple juice?
This will be a great opportunity to go Christmas shopping! Several stands will be filled with handmade crafts, ornaments, wooden toys, candles, and much more. As you browse through stalls, look for local products like honey, jams, and traditional Alsatian wine, which are perfect as souvenirs!
If you're coming with kids, check out workshops and cultural performances. Traditional dance and music performances will highlight local customs and traditions, and you can enjoy workshops on crafts or baking with your children!
Expect cold winter weather, typical for the Alsace region. Daytime temperatures typically reach around 5°C (41°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop to just below freezing, hovering around -1°C (30°F). Snow is quite possible, but that will add to the festive ambiance! Dress in layers and enjoy this great market!
The market opens every day at 11:30 AM and closes at 9 PM.
