The Edison Festival of Light was founded in 1938 to celebrate the legacy of Thomas Edison, who made Fort Myers his winter home and even called it a "perfect winter retreat." Edison's connection to the city is significant, as he spent many winters there with his family. His home and laboratory are now part of the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. The festival was created to honor Edison's contributions to science, innovation, and society.

Over the years, the festival has become one of Southwest Florida's largest celebrations, combining educational, cultural, and community-oriented events. The event's goal has always been to unite the community while celebrating Edison's achievements and the area’s history.

Fun fact! Thomas Edison personally attended one of the early parades in Fort Myers, further solidifying his connection to the festival! He invented the Electric Parade concept with the development of electric lights, which directly inspired the use of illuminated floats, making it a perfect homage to his legacy.

What to Expect When Attending Edison Festival of Light 2025

The main event will take place on February 15 - the Grand Parade of Light. This largest night parade in the Southeast winds through the city's heart in the Downtown River District. You can find prime viewing spots along First Street and the downtown riverfront area. This Light Grand Parade is marvelous, with national participants, local marching bands, floats, street performers, local government and law enforcement officials, and more.

The Caloosa Sound Convention Center will host STEMtastic Day of Discovery on February 8. This hands-on educational experience, designed for kids and adults, will inspire curiosity, innovation, and a love for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

On February 9 at Centennial Park and Hendry Street, you can attend the wiener dog races and the Pet Parade at the Mutt Strutt event. This is one of the most adorable and heartwarming events, celebrating our four-legged friends and their owners!

February 9 is reserved for children with events like the Junior Fun Run, Junior Parade, and Junior Coronation and Awards. These are fantastic, family-friendly events specifically tailored to celebrate the creativity, energy, and enthusiasm of children and youth in the Fort Myers community. Young participants turn out to show these qualities and have fun. The Junior Coronation and Awards, scheduled after the Fun Run and Parade, will occur at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center. You can expect the awards ceremony and the selection of Junior King and Queen.

The Edison Festival will conclude with Crafts on the River and the Classic Car Show. Crafts on the River is a juried craft fair featuring artisans and makers from Fort Myers and beyond. It offers an array of handcrafted products. The event blends shopping, art appreciation, and a festive atmosphere, making it a favorite for visitors of all ages.
