The Sydney Mardi Gras is where everyone is 'Free to Be!'

Sydney organized its first Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on June 24, 1978. The event was a part of international solidarity with the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York (1969).

The event included the march that was met with police violence, and 53 arrests happened. Besides the marching, there were also protests and a nighttime street celebration along Oxford Street.

Despite the intervention of the police, this marked a turning point for LGBTQIA+ activism in Australia.

By the 1990s, Mardi Gras had become a global LGBTQIA+ event, and in 1994, the parade became a nighttime spectacle! This parade aims to embrace themes of love, unity, and pride.

Expect many signature events! Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival brings an exciting collaboration with Sydney Mardi Gras Qtopia Sydney, which is the world's largest center for queer history and culture.

The main event is the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, scheduled for March 1. It will take place along Oxford Street and feature over 100 floats, extravagant costumes, and live music.

Another important event before the parade is Fair Day at Victoria Park. This family-friendly event includes live music, food, market stalls, and community vibes. There will be a lot going on this day. For example, Trans Camp and the Karaoke Cave are set to make their Fair Day debut, adding even more fun to the festival's grand opening event.

You can also attend exhibitions, film screenings, and cabaret performances at the events that focus on Queer Art and Culture. Cabaret icon Reuben Kaye will present a memorable show filled with comedy.

Expect many parties, such as Mardi Gras Party, Kaftana Pool Party, and Paradiso Pool Party. The Mardi Gras Party is the biggest one! DJs and performers will provide you with the ultimate dancefloor experience! This party will last for 8 hours, promising a wild night.

The Blak and Deadly: First Nations Gala Concert will be held at City Recital Hall on February 27! This event is a celebration of First Nations and queer culture, featuring local art, music, comedy, and daring performances.
