French for Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is well known for its culturally diverse celebrations, which are held in various countries, including America. The first Mardi Gras was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, although some argue that the port city of Mobile, Alabama, was the first to observe the event.

So many people celebrating Mardi Gras quickly inspired the city of Galveston to organize its first luscious balls and parades in 1876. In the modern era, the event expanded to feature street performances, live music, and other forms of entertainment. Today, this event is Texas' largest mardi gras celebration!

What to Expect When Attending Mardi Gras Galveston 2025

Watch stunning floats, marching bands, and performers parade through the streets. The Strand Historic District hosts the most popular parades, but others happen around the island. Over 20 parades will be featured, including the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius and the Knights of Momus Krewe Grand Night Parade!

Be ready to catch beads, coins (doubloons), and other fun trinkets thrown by float riders. More than 3 million beads will be thrown to mark the beginning of these festivities!

Many attendees will wear colorful wigs, masks, and costumes in traditional Mardi Gras shades of purple, green, and gold. Multiple stages across the festival will offer live performances by local bands and nationally known artists.

You'll get to enjoy Galveston's signature dishes, such as gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, and beignets, along with festival-style food.

Attendees pay a gate fee to enter the Mardi Gras Entertainment District, where most parades, headline concerts, balcony parties, vendor booths, and other festivities are held. Children under 12 can enter for free!
