Göteborg Film Festival 2025

Creativity and inspiration are the focus of the Göteborg Film Festival!

The Göteborg International Film Festival was founded in 1979 by a group of cinema enthusiasts led by Gunnar Bergdahl. The inaugural festival was held at a single venue and featured just 17 films from 7 countries! In the 1980s, the Dragon Award was established as the festival's top honor for the best Nordic film.

Today, this festival celebrates cinema with over 250 feature films from 80 countries across around 700 screenings! Movies are presented at different venues, such as the Draken Film Theater, Biopalatset, Stora Teatern, and Capitol Cinema.

The Gothenburg International Film Festival is the largest film event in the Nordic countries. The world's best-discovered films are brought to Göteborg each year as the festival's program committee travels the globe to find them.

From January 24 to February 2, this city in Sweden will gather filmmakers and film lovers. Join them!

What to Expect When Attending Göteborg Film Festival 2025

Each year features unique themes exploring cultural, political, and artistic topics through film. The theme for this year's Gothenburg Film Festival is Disobedience, focusing on the power of civil resistance and the complex questions that arise during rebellions.

The festival welcomes hundreds of film guests, including directors, actors, cinematographers, and producers, who interact with audiences during screenings and in more informal settings.

Expect glamorous opening and closing ceremonies at the Draken Film Theatre and other iconic venues. Many film screenings are followed by Q&A sessions where you can engage in conversation with directors, actors, and producers.

There will also be workshops and seminars, perfect for film enthusiasts and professionals wanting insights into the industry.

You can attend award ceremonies after several competitions, such as the Nordic Competition, Ingmar Bergman, and International Competition.

Prepare for cold weather, with average temperatures ranging from -2 C to 2 C (28 F to 36 F). Rain and snow are expected, so dress in layers, bring an umbrella, and have fun.
