The first carnival in Copenhagen was held in 1982. Inspired by the catchy rhythms of Brazilian and Caribbean carnivals, it was a small street celebration with the theme ''The Street Is the Stage and You Are the Clown.'' The event quickly became Denmark's largest festival for world music, with thousands of dancers, musicians, and spectators each year.

With its mix of samba, reggae, and global beats, the festival features three days of joy and fun and brings the city to life. Unique thing about it? Unlike many other carnivals, this one spreads over many locations; its main venue is Fælledparken, but you'll find festivities all over Copenhagen's city center, around Strøget and Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square).

From parades and music to yummy food, here's what you'll find:

• Parades: The highlight of the carnival is its spectacular street parades, with performers in colorful costumes. Acrobats, stilt walkers, and fire dancers will be there to make the experience even more magical. The main parades take place in Copenhagen's city center (Rådhuspladsen, Strøget, and Gothersgade) and Fælledparken, where the biggest performances happen.
• Music: Throughout the city, you’ll hear music styles such as samba, reggae, salsa, steelpan music, and afrobeat. DJs also take over different areas, so you'll hear electronic beats and house music. The best places with music are in Fælledparken, where the main stages are set up, and throughout the city center, where pop-up performances can happen at any moment.
• Food: The carnival is also a paradise for food lovers. The event features street food stalls with delicious treats from around the world. You can indulge in Latin American dishes like tacos, empanadas, and Brazilian BBQ or explore Caribbean flavors such as jerk chicken and plantains. For those wanting a local taste, there are also Danish festival snacks like smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and pølser (Danish hot dogs). Fælledparken is the best place for food, but you’ll also find pop-up stalls along the parade routes.
• Activities: Beyond the parades and music, Københavns Karneval offers many ways to get involved. Dance workshops let you learn samba, salsa, or Afro-Caribbean moves from professional dancers, while costume and face painting booths help visitors get into the carnival spirit. There’s also a dedicated kids' carnival area with fun games, performances, and interactive activities for families. Art lovers can also explore street art and cultural exhibitions.

Here’s how you can get there:

• Metro: Take M3 (Cityringen) or M4 to Rådhuspladsen Station. You can also take M3 to Trianglen Station, then walk for about 5 minutes.
• Bus: Buses 2A, 5C, 6A, 26 stop near Rådhuspladsen. For Fælledparken, take bus 1A, 3A, 14, or 150S to Trianglen or Øster Allé.
• Train (S-Tog): Take S-Tog to Nørreport Station, then transfer to the metro or walk.

Copenhagen is very bike-friendly! You can rent a Bycyklen (public bike) or a Lime scooter to get around easily.
