Hundreds of thousands of Yoshino cherry trees will bloom in Macon; come and see their beauty!

The story behind the Macon Cherry Blossom Festival is quite fascinating. In 1949, William A. Fickling Sr. discovered a beautiful tree in his backyard. As no one could recognize which tree that was, Mr. Fickling's curiosity grew. During his trip to Washington, he saw the exact tree at Tidal Basin and realized it was a cherry tree called Yoshino.

Over time, the number of Yoshino Cherry trees gradually increased. Fickling agreed to donate them to Carolyn Crayton, who organized their planting.

In 1982, Crayton came up with the idea of creating a festival dedicated to these trees. The first Macon Cherry Blossom Festival was held in Third Street Park. Interestingly, the festival was organized on Mr. Fickling's birthday, March 23, matching the day the cherry trees usually bloom!

New trees are donated yearly to Macon, now known as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World!
