Initially, the event was a date harvest celebration to show off the Coachella Valley’s thriving date industry, first held in 1921. The festival was integrated with the Riverside County Fair and officially became the National Date Festival.

The Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival are inspired by the date palm's Middle Eastern origins. It incorporates themes like Arabian Nights, including parades, decorations, and even camel races! Moreover, it traditionally includes a Queen Scheherazade Pageant, named after the storyteller from the Arabian Nights tales! This festival has even been featured in films and media to present its Arabian Nights theme and unique charm.

What to Expect When Attending Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival 2025

The fair will operate Thursdays through Sundays and on Presidents' Day (Monday, February 17), remaining closed on other Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

You'll learn a lot about dates, including their history and cultivation, and you'll have opportunities to sample and buy a variety of date-based products. Don’t miss date shakes, stuffed dates, and date desserts!

There will also be livestock exhibits, where you'll see prize-winning animals and educational displays about farming. At horticultural displays, you'll explore beautiful arrangements and learn about desert-friendly plants.

Daily parades will feature floats, marching bands, and costumed performers. The festival’s Arabian Nights theme infuses everything from décor to performances, celebrating the heritage of date palms!
