The wildest winter fiesta goes by the name 'Sitges Carnival!'

Carnaval de Sitges was formed based on ancient pagan festivals that celebrated the arrival of spring. Later, it adapted to Christian traditions, marking the days leading up to Lent. By the late 19th century, Sitges had developed its unique and flamboyant take on Carnival. It started to blend traditional festivities with the town's creative spirit and openness.

Over time, it evolved into a bold and inclusive celebration, reflecting Sitges' status as an artistic and LGBTQ+ center. Today, it's renowned for its extravagant parades, vibrant costumes, and festive atmosphere.

What to Expect When Attending Carnaval Sitges 2025

The festivities begin on Tuesday with Mantillas night, which marks the traditional launch of the Gay Carnival. The King of the Carnival, the event's central figure, arrives on Thursday. The Carnival king strolls through the streets of Sitges, heading to the town hall, where he takes command of the village for the festival's duration. This is followed by a lively series of parades and parties.

The two main parades are on Sunday and Tuesday. The Rua de la Disbauxa (Parade of Debauchery) happens on Sunday. The Rua de l’Extermini (Extermination Parade) takes place on Tuesday. Both epic parades wind through the town's main streets and are famous for elaborate floats, costumes, and performances along the seafront.

The children will happily march, too, at the Children's Parade! The route goes from the end of Avenida Sofia, Paseo de la Ribera (seaside), La Fragata, and back along the Ribera promenade (mountainside), Bassa Rodona, Plaza del Pou Vedre, Cap de la Vila, and so on.

Ash Wednesday honors the death of His Majesty Carnestoltes, the King of Carnival, with the Burial of the Sardine. His coffin is carried through Sitges, followed by grieving widows to where the will is read. The route of this procession will start from Francesc Gumà, Jesus, Cap de la Vila, and much more to the height of the El Greco monument and La Fragata Beach. With this act, the carnival says goodbye until next year.

As a gay tourist destination, besides the parade, the Sitges Gay Carnival continues during the official celebrations. Pink Night, Mantillas Night, Tourists Night, and Widows Night are just some of the special parties celebrated by gay bars and nightclubs in town, such as Parrot Pub, Sauna Sitges, The Parade, and La Locacola.

In February, the weather in Sitges, Spain, is expected to be cool and dry, typical of its winter climate. Average daytime highs will be approximately 14 C (57 F), with nighttime lows potentially falling to around 5 C (41 F). To stay warm, it's smart to dress in layers.

• Bus: Companies like MonBus offer affordable buses from Barcelona to Sitges, which drop passengers close to the town center. Check the MonBus website for schedules and the best route.
• Car: If you prefer driving, Sitges is accessible via the C-32 motorway. However, parking can be challenging during Carnival due to road closures and high demand.
