Kölner Karneval 2025
Join other carnival revelers at the Cologne Carnival, which has roots going back to ancient times!
The Cologne Carnival is one of Germany’s most joyous open-air celebrations. Locals often call it the 'fifth season of the year.'
With Christianity's influence, it became a pre-Lenten festivity where people let loose before the fasting and reflection of Lent. Even though Cologne has been hosting Carnival events for centuries, the modern version started in 1823 with the establishment of the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee.
Here's a fun tidbit: locals shout “Kölle Alaaf!” during the Carnival—it’s the ultimate cheer for Cologne, translating loosely to "Cologne above all!" You’ll hear it everywhere, from parades to pubs.
The Rose Monday Parade (Rosenmontagszug) is one of the festival's highlights, dating back to 1823. It’s a kaleidoscope of passing floats, music, and costumed groups tossing candy and flowers into the crowd. Catching the goodies is half the fun—just be ready for some serious competition! Bring your kids to catch some chocolate or toy and yell “Kamelle!” which means 'candies.'
Another quirky fact: Women’s Carnival Day (Weiberfastnacht) kicks off the wildest days of the season. Traditionally, women take over the town halls and cut off men’s ties as a playful symbol of “snipping” away their power. It’s all good fun and a great excuse for everyone to party.
The carnival will take place throughout the city of Cologne, with major events centered in the city's historic districts and public squares. Heumarkt and Alter Markt, festival tents, bars and breweries, and Kölner Dom are all places where you can have fun!
Have a magnificent time at the Cologne Carnival from February 27 to March 5!
What to Expect When Attending Kölner Karneval 2025
Women's Carnival marks the official start of the street carnival, with celebrations beginning at 11:11 AM.
Smaller parades, like the Schull-un Veedelszöch (School and Neighborhood Parade), also add charm and variety. These parades present local schools and community groups on Carnival Sunday, March 2. The Rose Monday Procession (this is a big one!) is scheduled for March 3 and will feature elaborate floats, dance groups, and marching bands! Nubbelverbrennung (Burning of the Nubbel) is a traditional ceremony on Violet Tuesday, March 4, and it symbolizes the end of the festivities. However, the Carnival ends with a big climax on Ash Wednesday.
Prepare for crazy days! Expect to see so many costumed people! Bring your family and friends, dress up as fairies, pirates, or whatever comes to mind, and blend into the festive atmosphere!
The Cologne Carnival has its own soundtrack! Traditional Kölsch bands like Brings and Höhner perform everywhere, singing Carnival anthems you’ll quickly learn to love (and probably hum for days afterward).
Each evening will be crowded, but the daytime parades and events are great for families. Kids love dressing up and collecting candy during the parades!
You can expect pretty chilly weather, with daily high temperatures hovering around 6–8°C (43–46°F) and nighttime lows dropping to 0–1°C (32–34°F). Rain is expected, so wear a warm costume and bring an umbrella!
