How to get to Puerto Vallarta from Puerto Vallarta Airport
Bus
Puerto Vallarta International Airport is quite close to the city it serves, but don't expect the rapid mass transportation infrastructure you often find at European or Asian airports here. Instead, the airport is connected to the city only by road, so once you've dropped off your bags at a Puerto Vallarta Airport luggage storage, you'll need to head to the highway to get to the city itself.
The cheapest way to do that is by bus. An airport shuttle bus can make the journey from the airport itself to the Romantic Zone, with many hotels located here, in around 10 minutes. Many different providers are offering this service, so prices can vary a lot, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $20-$40.
Rideshare
A number of companies have emerged to provide various road transportation options from the airport to the city. Companies include Gray Line, Jayride, and Uber, among others.
You'll have several different options for how you get to the city, ranging from a seat in a passenger van to your own car service complete with a driver who will meet you in the terminal. Of course, a private car will cost you more – around $32 one way. A seat in a shared shuttle, on the other hand, will be around $17.
Taxi
As is usually the case in Mexican airports, you'll be offered plenty of taxi services almost from the minute you step off the plane, many of them not particularly legitimate. A better option is to use the registered taxi firm that the airport information desk can contact for you, or book ahead.
AeroTPV offers taxis at the airport that you can book online, with a car for one costing around $26.
However you decide to reach the city, you can expect to drive to take around 10 minutes unless traffic is particularly bad. Find a convenient location to store your luggage with Bounce, and you can make the trip much easier on yourself.
Things to do near Puerto Vallarta Airport
Aquaventuras Park
Offering a fantastic place to cool off and have some fun, this exciting waterpark is just a short journey north of the airport, and it's a guaranteed hit for anyone traveling with their family. Then again, Puerto Vallarta is hot enough in the summer that a quick spin on the waterslide is appealing to just about anyone.
It's only a 12-minute drive from the airport to the waterpark, so if you just want something quick and easy to do before getting on a plane, you can jump in a taxi and be at the park quite quickly. Once you're there, you'll find rides, slides, swimming pools, and artificial beaches. Additionally, this park also offers the opportunity to swim with live dolphins, which is something not every waterpark in the world can offer you.
Leave the bags behind with our luggage storage services and bring only your bathing suit and towel to this thrilling attraction close to the airport.
Boca de Tomates
One thing Puerto Vallarta isn't exactly short of is fantastic beaches. But this one, although it is perhaps the closest to the international airport - close enough that you'll be able to watch planes taking off and landing as you stroll along the water's edge - still manages to feel like something of an unspoiled wilderness.
Cool off with a dip in the crashing waves or stretch out on the soft sand to enjoy everything that makes the Riviera Nayarit so special. You'll often find this beach almost abandoned, so it's a great place to take a break before or after a long flight and enjoy the more natural side of Mexico's Pacific Coast.
And don't miss the sea turtle camp at the southern end of the beach. This sanctuary is devoted to protecting the sea turtles that call the Mexican coast home, and you can meet the turtles they're currently rehabilitating when you visit. You'll learn all about the lifecycle of this gentle marine reptile, and if you're lucky, you may even get to witness a release of baby sea turtles back into the wild.
This beach is actually close enough to the airport that you can walk here, though around 40 minutes of walking under the Mexican sun isn't particularly appealing. Instead, hop in a taxi or take a car service for a ride of around 15 minutes to reach this incredible wild beach.
Pirate Ship Vallarta
Just to the south of the airport itself, this beautiful wooden ship is a relic of a vanished age. The ship is staffed by costumed actors who will take you back to the golden age of piracy, and the company offers a variety of different experiences, including dinner cruises, snorkeling expeditions, and treasure hunts. Unsurprisingly, this is one of the most popular attractions in Puerto Vallarta for families traveling with kids, but really, no matter how old you are, it's great fun to head out on the ocean waves with this scurvy crew.
