About the British Museum
Located in the Bloomsbury district in Central London, the British Museum has an astonishing collection of at least eight million objects. Near Tottenham Court Road underground station, the museum’s artifacts span two million years of human history and the fascinating cultures that have developed over time. Collections are organized by theme and location, and visitors can browse through mankind’s greatest discoveries of past civilizations.
The Egyptian collection is one of the museum’s most celebrated sections, with artifacts dating to the time of antiquity. The legendary Rosetta Stone, granite statues, mummification exhibits, and ancient hieroglyphs are among the items to be discovered here.
Other sections delve into the human relationships with death, memory, desire, and love. There’s also an extensive list of objects depicting real and mythological animals. Some of the prized animal works include Greek marble statues, Japanese porcelain elephants, and Neo-Assyrian artwork.
Entrance to this cultural wonderland is free, but the museum politely recommends a donation of £5. Visitors can also book private tours and arrange special exhibitions. Before you leave, check out the items at the Museum Shop, including prints, books, homeware, fashion items, souvenirs, and more.
British Museum Bag Policy
The museum staff will search all packages, bags, rucksacks, and personal items before entering the facility. While a cloakroom is available near the museum’s main gates for coats and umbrellas, they don’t provide luggage storage facilities. Folding bikes, skateboards, musical instruments, skateboards, and wheeled cases are also not allowed inside, regardless of weight and size.
If you need somewhere to store your belongings, book the best luggage storage service with Bounce. We partner with local businesses to offer a designated area to keep your items safe while you’re out and about. We charge the same rate for bags of all sizes, from large suitcases to ski equipment.
Can you leave luggage at the British Museum?
No. The British Museum doesn’t have luggage lockers, so you can’t leave excess baggage at the facility. If your bags or luggage is larger than 40cm by 40cm by 50cm and heavier than eight kilograms, you’ll have to find an alternative luggage storage option nearby.

Is the British Museum cloakroom free?
Only members have free access to the British Museum’s cloakroom. Otherwise, you’ll be charged per item. For instance, bags up to 4 kilograms cost £2.50, and £5 for those that weigh up to 8 kilograms. Any item heavier than 8 kilograms can’t be checked in. If you leave your coat, you’ll have to pay £2 and £1 for umbrellas.
There are no weight or size restrictions with Bounce, and we won’t charge you extra for heavier or bigger bags. If you want to store an item but are in doubt, you can reach out to our amazing customer support team that’s available 24/7 to address your concerns.
