About Safeco Field (T-Mobile Park)
Safeco Field, also fondly called by locals as “The Safe,” is a stadium located in Seattle in the state of Washington and is the home of the city’s Major League Baseball (MLB) team – the Seattle Mariners. Situated in the SoDo neighborhood of the city, near the Interstate 90’s western terminus, Safeco Field has a retro-modern style. It features several amenities, including its famous retractable roof. The stadium was built in 1999 to be used as the new home of the Mariners, replacing the team’s original stadium - Kingdome. Ever since the inaugural game at the stadium was held on July 15, 1999, Safeco Field has been widely regarded as one of the best baseball game facilities in the United States. Apart from MLB games, however, the stadium has hosted several other sporting and non-sporting events such as the 2001 Seattle Bowl, Wrestlemania XIX, and even Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.
The baseball stadium was named Safeco Field after a 20-year naming rights agreement was signed with Safeco Insurance, a Seattle-based insurance company. For the longest time, the stadium retained the name and was referred to as “The Safe.” However, when the 2018 season came, Safeco refused to renew the naming-rights deal. As a result, on December 19, 2018, the rights were acquired by wireless network operator T-Mobile, and the ballpark was renamed to T-Mobile Park. This name change became effective officially on January 1, 2019.
Fun fact: The Safeco Field (T-Mobile Park) has the biggest video screen in all the stadiums in the Major League Baseball, with a measurement of 11,425 square feet. In comparison, the second biggest screen is found at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium, measuring 8,820 square feet.
