  • This was a hidden gem of a shop I stumbled upon on my first trip to Kyoto. I originally just wanted to borrow it to store my luggage and find shelter from the rain. The owners, a husband and wife, spoke excellent English and were very friendly. They explained how to use matcha in great detail. I hope I'll have the chance to come back again!

  • The ice cream was delicious, and the owners, a husband and wife, spoke excellent English and were very hospitable. You can quickly fill out a luggage drop-off form online even without a reservation.

  • Very nice place and very well located (be careful with Google Maps, it shows the location on the back street). The owners were very kind, polite, and attentive. We had no problems or getting lost. They were clear with the information and even recommended things to do. I loved the place!

The day after a hurricane we had very little tourists on the site and eventually the sun was coming out.

Bag storage near JR Inari Station for your Fushimi Inari visit

Recommended for: international tourists, day trippers, backpackers.

JR Inari Station is the closest train stop to Fushimi Inari Taisha, and it’s a small one. The shrine entrance sits directly across from the station exit, so you can reach the first torii gates in under a minute. That convenience is also why mornings get busy: nearly every visitor arrives the same way, at the same time. A few coin lockers sit just outside the gate, mostly small to medium sizes, and they tend to fill early. Bounce locations in Kyoto offer storage from ¥500 and it takes bags of any size.

Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine: Torii Gates, Foxes and Hike Guide

Recommended for: first-time visitors, travelers, photographers, culture-focused visitors.

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of more than 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan, and this Kyoto landmark has stood at the base of Mount Inari for over 1,300 years, dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice, sake and prosperity. The famous thousand torii gates are each donated by an individual or a company hoping for good fortune, so walk around the back of any vermilion gate and you’ll find the donor’s name and date carved in black. Stone fox statues, the messengers of Inari, guard the shrine grounds, and many hold a key in their mouths that is traditionally linked to the rice granary. Beyond the main gates, the Fushimi Inari hike winds up the mountain past tiny shrines and moss-covered foxes, and the quieter you go, the more you’ll find. The trail climbs through steps and uneven ground, so it helps to go light. If you’re arriving at Fushimi Inari Station or JR Inari Station with luggage, Bounce has Kyoto luggage storage nearby.
In the Fushimi Inari-taisha park, thousands of shrines can be found on one single trail. With the olympics coming to Japan in 2020 I wil post a couple of screen grabs from 360 photo’s I shot during my Japan (IVRPA Conference) visit in 2018.

What to eat near Fushimi Inari Taisha: street food and local flavors

Recommended for: food-focused travelers, families, couples and friends.

Most people heading to Fushimi Inari pass through Kyoto Station first. It's only two stops on the JR Nara Line. The station itself has over a thousand coin lockers spread across multiple floors, from the Karasuma exit to the Hachijo side near the Shinkansen gates. Prices range from about ¥400 for small lockers to ¥900 for large ones. Problem is, during cherry blossom season or autumn leaves, the big lockers vanish by mid morning. There's also a staffed counter called Crosta Kyoto on the B1 floor that accepts oversized items for ¥1,000 per day. For something quicker, Bounce partner stores around Kyoto Station let you book ahead and skip the search entirely. The app has a 4.9 rating, so you know people trust it. Drop your bags, hop on the Nara Line, and you're at the shrine in five minutes flat.
