About Harlem
Harlem is a neighborhood located in the northern area of Manhattan, a borough in New York City. It was named after the Haarlem, a city in the Netherlands, and a former Dutch village. When the British arrived, they removed the extra ‘a’ and has since been called Harlem. Throughout its history, Harlem has had its share of significant shifts in economy and population; during the 19th century, it was primarily occupied by Italian-Americans and Jewish residents. However, when the 20th century arrived, African-Americans started moving into the neighborhood as part of the Great Migration. During this period, a major African-American cultural movement took place, which would become what is referred to as the “Harlem Renaissance.” Unemployment also soared during the Great Depression in the 30s, which led to a surge of crime and poverty in the area.
Today, the crime rate in Harlem has drastically lowered, and the area has been the subject of gentrification. In fact, the neighborhood has become of the most exciting spots in New York City and boasts a rich culture characterized by history, music, and soul food. Needless to say, a visit to New York would not be complete without experiencing everything that Harlem has to offer.
Fun fact: Several avenues and streets in Harlem are co-named for its prominent residents. For instance, 125th Street is co-named Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and Lenox Avenue is co-named as Malcolm X Blvd.
