About Citi Field
Citi Field is the home baseball field for the New York Mets in the Corona Park-Flushing Meadows area in New York. It was built to replace Shea Stadium, where the New York Mets played from 1964 until 2008. The first game was played by college teams Georgetown and St. John’s on March 29th, 2009, but the Mets did not play on their new field until April 3rd when they played a charity exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox.
The stadium can accommodate up to 45,000 baseball fans and it is usually pretty full. One unique feature of the stadium is the Party City Party Deck in left field. The deck can hold up to 102 people and includes free food, beer, and other beverages. There is also the Jackie Robinson Rotunda that can hold up to 1,500 people and has a nine-foot statue of Jackie Robinson’s retired number 42. And don’t forget the Home Run Apple, which is an 18-foot red apple that is raised and lights up when the Mets hit a home run.
Fun Fact: Citi Field is the only ballpark in Major League Baseball that has orange foul poles instead of the usual yellow.
