About Yokohama Chinatown

Whether it’s the Red Brick Warehouse of Yokohama Port or the country’s largest Chinatown, Yokohama reflects the reopening period of Japanese history more than any other place in the country. When Japanese ports reopened to international trade to supply the capital city with imported goods, Yokohama became a hive of activity for both Western and East Asian traders. Chinese traders settled into the area and created one of the most vibrant non-Japanese communities in the country. With them came their cultural hallmarks, architecture, and (most importantly) cuisine.

Chinatown is situated in central Yokohama near the Tokyo Bay waterfront and is the perfect place to stop for a unique cultural experience not often found in Japan. If you’re visiting in February, you’re in for a treat as the Chinese New Year celebration is one of Yokohama’s most popular events. As in the American counterparts, you’ll know when you enter Yokohama Chinatown as you’ll be passing through the colorful gates built back in the 19th century. While Yokohama’s food scene is solid, you shouldn’t skip the chance to enjoy some authentic Chinese cuisine to break up all the ramen and sushi you’ve been eating.

If you’re planning on taking the short train ride or walking out to Yokohama Chinatown, luggage storage is a must. With Bounce, it's easy to find luggage storage at this popular tourist destination and anywhere else you may need it throughout the city.

Getting around Yokohama Chinatown

Chinatown is situated just south of downtown Yokohama and has a few transit stops nearby. The closest are Motomachi-Chukagai Station and Ishikawacho Station which provide JR train connections. It’s also walkable from the waterfront and a few other neighborhoods. Once you’re here, it’s incredibly easy to get around as you can walk from one end to the other in less than 15 minutes.

Yokohama Chinatown train connections

  • Yokohama Station: You’ll take the JR Minato Mirai Line (a five-minute walk) from Motomachi-Chukagai Station to get to the city’s primary rail hub in less than 15 minutes.
  • Shin Yokohama Station: You can take the Blue Line from Kannai (also a five-minute walk from Chinatown) to reach Shin Yokohama Station in the northern part of the city.

Getting to Yokohama Chinatown from Tokyo

  • If you’re heading directly from Tokyo, you can take the Tokaido Line to Yokohama Station and then transfer to the Negishi Line to reach Ishikawachō Station. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to Chinatown. The whole trip takes 45 minutes.
  • If you want to reach Shinjuku, you can take the F-Liner Express of the Fukutoshin Line from nearby Motomachi-Chūkagai Station (a seven-minute walk from Chinatown) and get there in just over an hour.

Getting here from the airport

  • From Narita Airport, you can take the JR Narita Express to Yokohama Station and then transfer to the Negishi Line to reach Ishikawacho Station in just under two hours. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to Chinatown.
  • Getting from Haneda Airport is quicker at about 45 minutes via the Yokohama Airport Limousine Bus or the Keikyū Airport Line and Negishi Line (transfer at Yokohama Station). You’ll get off at Yamashita Park and walk for a few minutes.
