Not far from the Innere Stadt, Wien Mitte is a comfortable walk from many of Vienna’s most renowned tourist attractions. Below are just a few iconic destinations you can easily reach from the Wien Mitte station.
The closest attraction to Wien Mitte is the Wiener Stadtpark, the city’s oldest public park, dating back to the mid-1800s. Measuring about 30 acres, this park is best known for its gold statue of the undisputed waltz king, Johann Strauss II. Waltz enthusiasts should take a trip to the southern edge of the Stadtpark to see the impressive Kursalon Hubner concert hall.
Originally designed as a spa, the Kursalon Hubner was one of the busiest dancing venues during Johann Strauss II’s heyday. As you stroll through the Wiener Stadtpark, you’ll also run across impressive statues dedicated to other prominent Viennese composers, including Schubert and Bruckner. This park is just a short 9 minute walk from the train station.
The Haus der Musik, also known as the House of Music, is arguably Vienna’s most impressive interactive museum. Even if you’re not a classical music buff, you’ll have a blast composing waltzes with friends and testing the physics of sound production in Haus der Musik’s hi-tech exhibits. Along the way, you’ll learn more about the lives of some of Vienna’s most famous residents, including Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Anyone traveling with kids should plan a stop at this family-friendly museum. Situated within walking distance from the station, you can get here in about 17 minutes.
Most museums have a bag policy, and Haus der Musik is no different. They ask all guests to leave coats, backpacks, or large items behind, and although they don’t have self-serve lockers on site they allow visitors to drop their belongings by the cash desk. If you don’t feel comfortable leaving your belongings at the museum, simply book baggage storage with us and explore the museum suitcase-free for a few hours.
If you couldn’t already tell, classical music plays a pretty significant role in Vienna’s identity. One of the best places to take in an authentic live music performance is the lovely Wiener Konzerthaus. Built at the start of the 20th century, the Wiener Konzerthaus now houses many of the city’s most prominent ensembles, including the Vienna Symphony and Vienna Chamber Orchestra.
You might even see the legendary Vienna Philharmonic inside this gloriously designed theatre. Fans of the fine arts should check Wiener Konzerthaus’s schedule to see if any interesting shows are happening before their visit to the Austrian capital. The concert hall is 14 minutes away from the train station by foot.
Once you’ve bought your ticket for a show at the Wiener Konzerthaus, be sure to book your luggage storage with a Bounce location close by. For safety reasons, guests aren’t permitted to have their coats, large bags, backpacks, umbrellas, and other related items at their seats. There’s a cloakroom available on site, or you can take your pick from our range of convenient locations.
Vienna International Airport is the only airport in the city, and therefore where most people who fly into Vienna arrive. It’s not that far from the city center at all and is easy to get to using public transit. To get from the airport to the Wien Mitte station, you’ll find a train route on the S7 line from the Flughafen Wien station at the airport.
You’ll have to ride for 8 stops, and it’ll take you just 26 minutes. Your ticket fare will cost about €4.40. Another useful alternative is the CAT train, which departs from the same station at the airport and goes directly to Wien Mitte. This route takes about 22 minutes but is a bit more expensive at €14.90 for a single adult ticket.
There are plenty of attractions near the station that’ll keep you busy for a few hours, but if you’re interested in seeing what else Vienna has to offer, you’ll find a whole range of great attractions just a little further away. With easy access to public transit at the station, none of the city’s hidden gems are inaccessible. Check out the spots listed below.
Less than a mile south of Wien Mitte, you’ll come across one of Vienna’s most breathtaking churches: Karlskirche, or St. Charle’s Church. Instantly recognizable from its domed ceiling and imposing columns, this 18th-century masterpiece was largely based on the Roman Baroque style of Bernini.
Inside, you’ll see heavenly ceiling frescoes, ornate sculptures, and a massive pipe organ. By the way, it’s believed Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi was buried somewhere near Karlskirche’s property. If you’re lucky, then you might even get to see a Vivaldi concert here while you’re in Vienna!
To get to Karlskirche, walk to the Landstraße subway station and ride the U4 line towards Huttledorf for 2 stops. Hop off at Karlsplatz and you’ll be a 4 minute walk from the church. This short commute should take you just 11 minutes total, and your ticket for the subway will be €1.20.
No trip to Vienna is complete without experiencing the world-renowned cafe culture. Luckily for tourists, many of Vienna’s most historic cafes are close to the Wien Mitte. Perhaps the most notable name on Vienna’s coffee scene is Cafe Central, which has been brewing java since 1876. True to its name, Café Central served as a central meet-up for some of the 20th century’s most influential (and notorious) figures. Amazingly, both Leon Trotsky and Adolf Hitler dined at Cafe Central while in Vienna.
When you’re ready to visit Cafe Central, just walk from Wien Mitte to the Landstraße subway station. Catch a seat on the U3 line in the Ottaking direction for 3 stops, and get off at Herrengasse. In just 2 minutes by foot, you’ll be entering the cafe. Getting here will take 10 minutes overall, and your ticket will cost €1.20.
If you only have time to visit one site in Vienna, see the glorious St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Originally finished in the 12th century, St. Stephen’s has weathered many turbulent times and retains its role as the center of Viennese spiritual life. For those who are brave, be sure to take a trip to St. Stephen’s catacombs for a ghoulish reminder of the Great Plague. Alternatively, consider taking a trip to the top of St. Stephen’s for a magical view of the “City of Music.”
There are plenty of reasons to visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, especially since it’s so close to Wien Mitte. Make your way to the Landstraße station and get on the next U3 line towards Ottaking, the same as you would to reach Cafe Central. This time you’ll only ride for 2 stops to Stephensplatz, which will bring you 2 minutes from the cathedral by foot. As usual, the subway will cost you €1.20.
With direct airport transportation and easy access to Vienna’s subway, Wien Mitte is a significant station for tourists. Visitors in Vienna should know Bounce offers plenty of storage options in and around the Wien Mitte station. Whether going to the mall, dining out at local restaurants, or sightseeing around the city, storing your luggage will make your trip easier.
If you still have empty slots on your Vienna itinerary, fill them with some of the many incredible activities and attractions around the city. Meander through the MuseumsQuartier which is full of exhibits and eateries, or take a journey back in time at the Hofburg Palace. For a true taste of the city, wander around the Naschmarkt, a 16th century open-air market that’s always a big hit with foodies.
Is traveling to new cities one of your favorite things to do? If so, keep your Bounce app downloaded on your mobile phone. That way, you’ll have access to all of our luggage storage locations which are found in most cities across the globe.
