About Vienna Schottentor

Vienna Old Town is one of Europe’s true gems, with wonderfully preserved architecture and glorious town squares tracing back to the centuries of prominence by the ruling Habsburg dynasty. With opulent palaces and official buildings built by the Austrian Imperial family, you’ll have an easy time filling up an afternoon of strolling through the Innere Stadt District, which is situated in the center of Vienna and is easily reached via subway or tram.

Schottentor Station is one of the most popular subway stops in the Vienna city center and is on the busy U2 Line of the Vienna U-Bahn. It’s named for a gate of the former city walls that ringed Old Town. It’s within walking distance from several notable destinations including Ringstrasse, Universität Wien, and the Rathausplatz. If you’re doing your trip to Vienna right, you’ll likely pass through this subway station.

Because of its location near the tourist haven of Old Town, you’ll likely want a secure place to store your bags while you poke around. That's why we offer convenient luggage storage services at so many Vienna locations, including at Universitätsstr 4.

How luggage storage is more convenient than train station lockers

  • Flexible sizes: You’re able to store items that luggage lockers simply can’t, which is especially important for travelers with skis. So you’ll be able to stop in Vienna Old Town, drop the ski gear off, poke around, and pick up your belongings before heading out to the Alps!
  • Guaranteed space: Because you book ahead of time, you won’t have to worry about locker availability on your way to Schottentor. This is huge in such a massively popular tourist destination.
  • Convenient opening hours: Our local business partners are generally open between 9 AM and 8 PM. You can also find locations open up to 24 hours when booking. Also, because our storage spots are staffed, they are more secure than unattended lockers. You can always safely store your luggage with us!

How to get to or from Vienna Schottentor Station

It’s an underground station below Maria-Theresien-Straße (official address: 1010 Vienna, Austria) and is walkable from the Univesity of Vienna along with plenty of the city’s top attractions and main transportation hubs. The U2 Line on the U-Bahn and multiple tram routes make it one of the most connected transit facilities in the city.

Public transportation

  • Subway Line U2: Pratersturn Station (10 minutes), Ernst Happel Station (15 minutes)
  • Tram Line #1: Mozarthaus (15 minutes), Wien Hauptbahnhof, also called Vienna Central Station (22 minutes), Hofburg Palace (7 minutes), St. Stephan’s Cathedral (7 minutes)
  • Tram Line #71: Karlskirche (17 minutes)

Connections to Vienna Airport

It’s fairly simple to reach Schottentor from Vienna International Airport, although it does involve a transfer. From the Flughafen Wien Train Station, take the S7 S-Bahn train to Praterstern Bahnhof and then transfer to the U2 Subway from there. It’s only a few minutes to Schottentor from there. The whole trip takes about 30-40 minutes.

There is also a city airport train (CAT) that connects the airport with Wien Mitte, which is reachable from Scottentor on the subway in about 20 minutes. In all, with the transfer, this option takes 45 minutes.

With its fascinating history and aesthetically pleasing architecture, Vienna is one of the must-visit European capitals. It is certainly a walking city, so don’t let your bags slow you down while you’re traversing the cobbled streets of Old Town or touring an impossibly lavish Habsburg Palace.
