About Sydney Circular Quay
Circular Quay is a harbor and international port found in the city of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Often considered the “gateway to Sydney,” the Circular Quay is located on Sydney Cove, which sits on the northern edge of the city’s Central Business District (CBD). Aside from functioning as a major port and transport node for Sydney, the neighborhood also serves as a heritage area, public square, and center for tourism in Australia.
Aside from being an exciting destination, Circular Quay, or colloquially known simply as “The Quay,” also has an interesting past. Back in 1788, Sydney Cove served as a landing spot and is believed the first part of Australia to be discovered by the western world. From then on, The Quay served as an important hub for shipping, transportation, and recreation.
Today, the port has retained its status as one of Sydney’s most vibrant areas and is teeming with cultural sites and popular attractions. Both locals and tourists flock to the area to see some of the best landmarks and spots in all of Australia. With its central location in the city, The Quay is a typical venue for community celebrations and is also a common spot for enjoying the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks and festivities. The area is also a favorite hangout spot, where buskers can be seen regularly performing and families and friends spending time together.
Fun fact: Circular Quay’s native name is Warrung, which means “little child.” Moreover, the area was initially known as Semi-Circular Quay, in relation to its shape, but was shortened to Circular Quay for ease.
