About Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris:
Saint-Lazare train station sits in the heart of Paris and serves nearly 300,000 passengers each day. It’s the city’s second-busiest railway station after Gare du Nord. People needing to make connections at the Gare Saint-Lazare will find it in the city’s 8th arrondissement (district), near Grands Boulevard. Travelers making connections from Normandy, as well as from the InterCity Trains, stop here. It’s also a stopping point for numerous city buses and the Metro. Gare Saint-Lazare is one of six railway stations serving the City of Light.
Designed by architect Juste Lisch, the Gare Saint-Lazare has been a source of inspiration for travelers, writers and artists for decades. At the height of the Impressionist period, artists Édouard Manet and Claude Monet were just a few of the artists who lived near the station and who found inspiration there.
In 1874, two years after moving to a location near the Gare Saint-Lazare, Édouard Manet showed his painting of the railway station at the Paris Salon. Called The Railway or Gare Saint-Lazare, Manet painted the depiction of the station from a friend’s backyard.
In 1877, Monet’s studio was near the railway station. It became the subject of seven Impressionistic pieces that he unveiled at a painting exhibition. Eventually, Monet painted 12 paintings of the station. This series became one of his most important and is noted for its composition and depiction of daily life in Paris. This subject matter marked a departure from the subjects that artists had traditionally painted in the past and demonstrated how forward-thinking artists in Paris were at the time.
And it isn’t just visual artists who found their inspiration in this train station. Plenty of writers have used the train station as a backdrop for their stories. In Raymond Queneau's book “Exercises in Style,” the Gare Saint-Lazare figures in prominently. Émile Zola mentions it in one of his books. The area behind the train station is the subject of the photo Derrière la gare de Saint-Lazare, a celebrated photo by photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.
If all of this sounds like the start of a grand Parisian adventure to you, you’d be correct. There are plenty of sights to see in and around the train station. Be sure to check out Bounce’s options for luggage storage in Paris-Saint-Lazare before you embark on your excursions.
Things to Do Near Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris:

Walking through its halls feels a bit like opening up a time capsule. Architecture buffs will appreciate its stately appearance, numerous tracks and clock sculpture.
Once you leave the station, there is even more to see, including some cool shops, plenty of theaters, interesting museums and lots of architectural wonders that tell the story of the city’s past. Here’s a look at some of the best destinations just outside the doors of the Gare Saint-Lazare.
Parisian Department Stores
Some of the most beautiful and fashionable department stores and boutique shops sit within a stone’s throw away from the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris. A quick walk will take you to the Boulevard Hausman and the Galeries Lafayette department stores. Jewelry lovers will appreciate the Place Vendôme and perfume aficionados will love the Fragonard perfume museum.
After all of your shopping is done, there is only one way to relax: at the Café de la Paix for a cuppa your favorite hot beverage. If you’re trying to find a good reason to stash your bags somewhere in the City of Light, this might be just the excuse you need to check out Bounce’s options for bag storage in Gare Saint-Lazare .
Here’s another must-see site for architecture and history buffs alike: the Chapelle Expiatoire. Situated on Square Louis XVI, this neo-classical wonder was built in the early 1800s on the command of Louis XVIII. Marie-Antoinette was buried here in 1793 (along with others who fell victim to the French Revolution).
The chapel itself is meant to memorialize the royal family and is open year round to visitors, with a few black out dates (Jan. 1, May 1 and Dec. 25). It doesn’t cost much to visit: around five euros at the most.
As we do with all significant historical sites in the City of Light, we recommend that you look for a place to stash your bags. Before you tour the chapelle, be sure to find some luggage storage in Paris-Saint-Lazare (or nearby). Take a look at your Bounce app to locate the closest option.
If you love live theater, you will want to take in at least one performance at the Theatre des Mathurins. The theater is both fancy - just what you’d expect from a theater in Paris - and intimate. The atmosphere is cozy and small, allowing audiences to experience the actors’ performances up close.
If the Theatre des Mathurins falls on the small and cozy side of the scale, the Theatre de Mogador represents the grander side of the theatrical experience. While it’s not huge, it is lush, with its elegant red and gold interior. Plays like “Cats” and “Chicago” play here, with English subtitles no less.
One of Paris’s most celebrated neighborhoods, Montmartre is just about a mile from the Gare Saint-Lazare. This neighborhood atop a hill features winding cobblestone streets, cozy cafes filled with lively conversations, street-side shops and that indescribable something that makes it a memorable experience, no matter how many times you visit. It should also be noted that this neighborhood is on the hilly side.
If you’re thinking about investing in bag storage in Paris, you definitely want to do so if you’re visiting Montmartre. The whole experience will be both more comfortable and more magical without your bags in tow. Luggage storage in Paris-Saint-Lazare doesn't exist inside the walls of the train station: You'll want to turn to Bounce for all your bag storage needs.
