About Vienna Stephansplatz

One of Austria’s most treasured places, Vienna Stephansplatz is a beloved town square right in the heart of Vienna’s Old Town. It’s considered the geographic center of Vienna as well as the epicenter of the city’s historic landscape. With medieval, Baroque, and Gothic architecture everywhere, the square is lined with absolutely beautiful buildings.

There are wonderful traditional Austrian restaurants, cafes, luxury boutiques, and gift shops, but the main reason you’ll want to head to Stephansplatz would be to see its stunning cathedral, the Stephansdom. A dozen or so notable landmarks are also situated nearby, making Stephansplatz an easy launching point for sightseeing through the historic city center.

Stephansplatz is well-connected with the rest of the city via public transportation, and its metro station is one of the busiest in the world. It’s absolutely simple to reach this place via the subway or metro, this might explain why it’s such a popular destination.

While there will be crowds (and lines at Platz-side cafes like Demel), Stephansplatz is sprawling enough that your enjoyment won’t be hampered by other travelers. The cobbled streets around Stephansplatz are all worth exploring, with some of the city’s best landmarks within a short walk. This makes Stephansplatz one of the best places in Vienna to start your trip!

Vienna Stephansplatz bag policy

Being a public square, there are no firm rules about what you can bring to Stephansplatz. While this is convenient for travelers, anyone looking to poke around on a travel day will want to find a secure place to store luggage for a few hours. There aren’t any facilities or a luggage deposit, so using a service is your best bet.

Do Vienna train stations have luggage lockers?

It depends on the train station. Vienna Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station) is a massive transportation hub that offers plenty of amenities to accommodate the large number of commuters and international travelers. Vienna Hbf (as it’s called) does have limited storage lockers. A station like Wien Mitte, which is more geared towards local traffic and commuters, isn’t equipped with as many facilities. If you’re not taking the train through the Hauptbahnhof, finding a Vienna luggage storage service is your best bet.

How much does luggage storage cost at Vienna Airport?

Vienna Airport does offer self-service lockers in Terminal 3. The prices can vary based on the size of the item, but you should expect to pay between $6 and $11 per day for standard carry-on or checked-bag-sized items. The main drawback of these lockers is they aren’t accessible from the rest of the city. If you happen to need your items overnight, these lockers are closed.

Are hotel luggage storage services in Vienna safe?

If you have time or are heading to the hotel, you can always drop the bags off with the concierge. This is generally a secure way to store the bags because the concierge is accountable. This can be out of the way if you’re trying to get some sightseeing in. The most convenient options for luggage storage in Vienna would be services that have locations throughout the city, especially ones with locations near sightseeing and cultural hotspots.

Where can I leave my luggage in Vienna?

There are plenty of options, though they’re not all created equally… Some transportation hubs and attractions (such as the Spanish Riding School, the Natural History Museum, and the Art History Museum) will offer lockers, but these aren’t always reliable. The best option for luggage storage Vienna Stephansplatz has would be a service like Bounce. Bounce offers a network of partner locations throughout Vienna, which you can find via the mobile app and even book online. Bounce vets each location to ensure security and quality, and offers 24/7 customer support to make the whole experience as smooth as possible.

How to get to Vienna Stephansplatz

  • Train: Stephansplatz has its own metro station (simply called ‘Stephansplatz’) that’s conveniently located on the U-Bahn Subway via multiple lines. Both the U3 and U1 lines stop at Stephansplatz, and you can get to other transportation hubs like the Hauptbahnhof and Wien Mitte Station within a few minutes. Each ride costs only $4.
  • Bus: Bus lines 1A, 2A, and 3A all stop at Stephansplatz and cost a few dollars for a single ride. It’s important to note that Vienna buses don't operate on Sundays.
  • Taxi and rideshare: This is one of the most common ways to get between hotels and Stephansplatz, and you can get dropped off right at the entrance to the square. While it is door-to-door, it might only save a few minutes because of heavy traffic in this part of the city. The average ride will cost about $20 from other parts of the city center.
  • On two wheels: Vienna is well-equipped with cycling lanes and bike racks, and the historic city center near Stephansplatz is very flat. A few of the cobbled streets might need to be navigated on foot, however.
  • On two feet: If you’re heading to Stephansplatz from anywhere in the city center, you can reach it by foot in about 20 minutes, with the whole route being as scenic as possible.
  • Tram: The tram from Landstraße to Stephansplatz runs every 10 minutes and costs $4. This is only really convenient if you’re heading to the square from the Landstraße and Erdberg areas.

The best way to get to Vienna Stephansplatz from Vienna Airport

The City Airport Train (CAT) is the best way to get anywhere from Vienna Airport. With nearly constant service between the main airport train station and the city center, it’ll take less than 20 minutes to get to the Wien Mitte stop and it costs only $6. From there, it’s a short (and very scenic) walk to Stephansplatz. You can also take the U-Bahn U3 line from Wien Mitte to save a few minutes.

How to get to Vienna Stephansplatz from Wien Hauptbahnhof

Stephansplatz is just over a 10-minute train ride from Vienna’s Hauptbahnhof via the U1 subway. It costs about $4 and the U1 runs constantly throughout the day.

Things to do near Vienna Stephansplatz

Stephansdom

St. Stephen’s Cathedral, or Stephansdom, is one of the most important Habsburg landmarks still remaining. Considering it overlooks Stephansplatz, it's basically impossible to miss! This wonderful cathedral, which was one of the tallest buildings in the country for centuries, seamlessly melds Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The current structure dates back to the 14th century, but that replaced a small church that originated in the 11th century. So it’s safe to say this cathedral is quite old. The facade is incredible to behold from Stephansplatz, with its roof featuring a mosaic of tiles and its massive Heidentürme (Towers of the Heathens) looming overhead. You can tour the interior in about 30 minutes, and a ticket for a guided tour includes access to the catacombs and both towers.

Mozarthaus Vienna

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is one of Vienna's most famous (former) residents, and the house in which he spent three of his most productive professional years has been repurposed into a museum and visitor center. Classical music fans and history buffs flock to the Mozarthaus to learn about how he worked and lived in Vienna, there is a diverse range of exhibits and tours to guide you through his residence, which has been recreated with both original and model 18th-century furnishings.

Museum Judenplatz

One of the more poignant landmarks in Vienna, this museum is situated on the site of a former medieval synagogue that was a pillar of Vienna’s Jewish community. The museum focuses on the history of Jews in Austria and Europe and details their struggles to gain acceptance and merely survive in European society.

Staatsoper Opera House

Vienna’s heritage when it comes to classical music is probably the world’s finest. It’s no different when it comes to opera and ballet performances. One of the true meccas for these art forms is the Staatsoper Opera House in Vienna’s city center. Some of the most renowned performances are held here, but you don’t need a ticket to the Vienna Opera in order to appreciate this place. Built in the 19th century, Staatsoper features brilliant neo-Renaissance architecture and instantly became the premier venue in Europe. You can take a guided tour of the venue’s interior to learn about its history and different architectural achievements. You can also admire the many tributes to musical legends like Beethoven, Schubert, and Haydn through mosaics and busts. If you want the full Vienna experience, look into grabbing a ticket to a show.
