On the southwestern tip of Australia in Melbourne, Victoria, you can find the St. Kilda Pier in Port Phillip Bay. Offering panoramic views of the bay and miles of sandy beaches, the pier is a popular spot for both locals as well as tourists. The pier was built in 1853, although it has been redone several times since then. In the past, it was solely used as a private marina for yacht clubs but is now mostly a public pier for recreational boating, fishing, and cruise ship docking.
Parts of the breakwater are protected breeding grounds of the fairy penguins. These little blue birds are the smallest penguins in the world at just over a foot tall, and thousands of people visit the pier just to see them. If you have several hours to pass, take a fishing charter and see what you can reel in. If you only have a little while, just stroll down the 1,944-foot pier and enjoy the view, take some selfies, or walk on the beach.
Fun Fact: The fairy penguins only come out after the sun goes down.
While you are in St. Kilda, plan on looking around. Whether you are visiting from out of town or even if you are a local, there is always something new to see or do here. Bounce has some recommendations:
If you are in the city for the day or heading out on the town after work, taking along your luggage or bags is no fun. You don’t want to drag your suitcases in the sand on the beach, right? And many places don’t allow big bags. We at Bounce travel a lot too and have had that same problem. Leave your bags with one of our local partners for safekeeping while you explore and enjoy the pier, the beach, and the town.
Don't be weighed down by extra stuff while at St. Kilda Pier. Drop your bags off at one of our nearby locations to enjoy the pier and city hands-free.
