About Ipanema

Best known for Ipanema Beach, the neighborhood of Ipanema is in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the hottest tourist spots in the city, Ipanema brings together a diverse crowd all searching for the same thing, a place to relax and let go of life’s worries. Bring your surfboard and head out to Pedra do Arpoador, a rocky peninsula known for its fantastic waves. Lounge on the large rocks and watch the sunset while visiting with locals and other tourists.

Many people compare Ipanema to Copacabana, but really there is very little to compare. Ipanema draws the younger crowd with its amazing nightlife and beautiful white sandy beach. Ipanema has seen an increase in tourism as the neighborhood has become revitalized with new and innovative restaurants and boutiques. Stretch out on the beach and enjoy views of the Dois Irmaos, or Two Brothers Mountains. The beach became famous when the bossa nova, “Garota de Ipanema” or “The Girl from Ipanema” was released and became an international sensation. The song was written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes and is about a beautiful woman who passed by their bar every day.

Fun Fact: Ipanema is derived from two words in the Tupi language. Ipá means pond and nema means stinking, so loosely translated can mean stinking lake or worthless water. Teodoro Sampaio, a famous historian, concluded that the name means bad water.
