About Museumplein

Museumplein is the Dutch word meaning Museum Square. Museumplein is a gorgeous green space surrounded by some of the most incredible museums in Amsterdam and in the world. It’s part of the Museumkwartier (Museum Quarter) neighborhood in the Oud-Zuid district.

Known as a prestigious central neighborhood, it’s home to high-end shopping establishments, Amsterdam’s largest public park, some of the best restaurants in the area, and, of course, countless museums that will leave you awestruck.

Amsterdam is home to many incredible museums and Museumplein features the best of the best. Here, you’ll have access to the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, and Moco Museum, among others.

Museumplein was reconstructed in 1999 by the Swedish landscape architect Sven-Ingvar Andersson and in addition to its impressive collection of museums, the area is often used for large-scale events like festivals, celebrations, and political demonstrations.

During the winter months, the park’s pond becomes an ice skating rink and you’ll also find an underground supermarket at Museumplein. Concertgebouw (Concert Hall) is nearby where you’ll find the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra).

As you can see, Museumplein is home to much more than just museums. It’s an iconic cultural space smack dab in the middle of this elite Amsterdam neighborhood.
