About Napoli Centro Storico

A popular destination for cruise ships, you couldn't exactly say the city of Naples, in the south of Italy, is unknown. One of Italy's biggest cities, this is also the gateway to the stunning Amalfi coast, the island of Capri, and the atmospheric ruined Roman city of Pompeii. But this city, perched on a glittering bay in the shadow of volcanic Mount Vesuvius, hasn't always had the best reputation with tourists.

That's a pity because this beautiful city is as historic as they come. In fact, it's one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe, and there's no better place to explore the rich history of the region than in the Centro Storico, or historic center.

This is where you'll find some of Napoli's best attractions. But really, the true charm of the city is found on its streets. Allow yourself to wander among the old buildings, sampling some of the delicious street food on offer here, and you'll wonder why Naples isn't even more popular than it already is.

Can you leave luggage at Napoli Centrale?

Napoli Centrale is the main train station of Naples and lies just on the edge of the Centro Storico. You won't find luggage lockers at Naples central train station, but you will find luggage storage facilities in the form of a baggage drop. However, this luggage storage often fills up, especially during busy times. Luckily, you can easily find luggage storage locations near Napoli Centrale with Bounce.

Can I store luggage at a hotel if I'm not staying there?

Some hotels allow the general public to store luggage with them for a fee, but the hard part is finding places that will do that for you. Bounce takes the guesswork out of it by providing an easy-to-use app that can find nearby luggage storage locations at Naples train station, the city center, Naples Port, or anywhere else you want to go. We partner with local businesses like shops and hotels to make sure you can always find a place to store luggage near you.

Do train stations in Italy have lockers for luggage?

The major Italian train stations such as Naples Central Station and the central train station in cities like Rome and Florence will usually have luggage storage facilities, often run by a private company.

Does Naples airport have luggage storage?

Naples International Airport doesn't have storage lockers - due to concerns over terrorism and security, self-service storage lockers are almost unheard of in Italy. However, the airport does have luggage storage near security where you can leave your bags behind.

How to get to Napoli Centro Storico

Naples is a big city, but it's relatively easy to get around, especially in the historic center.

The Centro Storico itself lies near Napoli Centrale, with Piazza Garibaldi separating Naples Central Train station from this historic area. It's just a short walk from the station to the narrow streets of the city center.

However, the Centro Storico is quite large, and given how hilly Naples is, you may want to make things easier on yourself by taking advantage of public transport. The Metro stations of Piazza Cavour, Museo, Dante, and Duomo practically surround the historic center, and you can reach all of them with just a couple of stops from the train station.

If you're arriving by air, your best bet is to take the shuttle bus from the airport to Napoli Centrale, and then take the Metro from there.

On the other hand, if you arrive in the city via cruise ship, it's only a short walk from the terminal to Municipio Metro station near Castel Nuovo and then can get you just about anywhere in the Centro Storico you want to go.

However, it's also perfectly possible to walk from the cruise ship terminal into the center of town, so if you're up for the walk, this can be a better way to enjoy the usually great weather and fascinating sights.

Things to do near Centro Storico

Museo Cappella Sansevero

Naples is weird - in the best possible way. Many of the attractions in this ancient city are unlike anything you'll see anywhere else, so if you're a fan of the quirky, the esoteric, and even the occasionally morbid, you'll feel right at home here.

A prime example is the Museo Cappella Sansevero. Located in the heart of the Centro Storico, this chapel belonged to an 18th-century prince who was rumored to be an alchemist and sorcerer, among other things. And when he commissioned the best sculptors of the time to decorate the chapel dedicated to his parents, his legend only grew. Sculptor Antonio Corradini created a marble statue of Jesus Christ that was so realistic that a rumor began that the Prince had found a way to turn people into stone.

The Veiled Christ statue is certainly a highlight of the chapel, but the legend surrounding it is almost as appealing. Don't miss the strange anatomical machines in the basement, highly-detailed models of the human circulatory system that, again, made locals think the Prince was involved in witchcraft.

Large bags aren't allowed in the chapel for security reasons. Luckily, Bounce provides multiple locations in the Centro Storico so you always have a convenient option for a place to store your luggage.

How to get to Cappella Sansevero

Dante is the nearest Metro station to the chapel and is only 700 m away. Dante is on line 1 of the Naples Metro system which you can catch from Napoli Centrale Station.

Napoli Sotterranea

Continuing with the weird theme, Napoli Sottaranea, or Naples Underground, is a can't-miss attraction for anyone with an interest in the past - so long as they are not claustrophobic.

Naples is built on volcanic stone, and almost from the moment the city was founded by the Greeks, they began excavating tunnels and cisterns under the city. The Romans continued this tradition, and in the Middle Ages, this sprawling system of tunnels and aqueducts kept the city supplied with fresh water.

Once modern plumbing was introduced, these tunnels fell out of use. However, they got a new lease of life during the second world war, when the city converted them into bomb shelters.

Wandering through the channels that wind their way beneath the Centro Storico gives you a unique perspective on the layered history of Naples. Occasionally, the tunnels get tight, so make sure you leave your bags behind for a few hours or longer while you embark on this exciting tour below the city streets.

How to get to Napoli Sotterranea

The entrance to the tunnels is tucked away on a side street not far from the legendary San Carlo theater. Municipio is your closest metro stop, but you can also take bus number E6 to Piazza Carolina to get even closer.

Naples National Archaeological Museum

This is undoubtedly a highlight of the city, and even if you're not a big fan of ancient history, it's worth coming here to learn more about the city's past, especially its Roman era.

This National Museum is recognized for its importance because it houses most of the finds recovered from the buried cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. If you can't make it to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pompeii, this is the next best thing. And if you can, seeing the exhibits here either before or after your trip will help you get a better understanding of Roman life.

Of course, this is Naples, where you can never escape the weird. The dubious highlight of the museum is its Gabinetto Segreto, or secret cabinet. This is where some of the more salacious finds from the Pompeii excavations are stored, and for a long time, only men were allowed inside, since the sight of so much phallic and sexual art could be dangerous for the weaker constitutions of women.

Nowadays, people of any gender can visit, and even if history isn't your thing, it's definitely an experience to see just how sex-obsessed the Romans were.

How to get to Naples National Archaeological Museum

Piazza Cavour Metro station is the closest to the museum. It's only 300 m from the station to the museum, so you can drop off your bags in one of our nearby locations thanks to our extensive network of partners, and take some time enjoying this historical treasure.
