How to make the most of your layover in Houston

A plane takes off from Houston International Airport (IAH) with control tower and other short buildings in the background

In Houston, a layover isn't just a layover, it's a full-blown adventure! It's known as Space City and home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, so it's literally out of this world! But it’s not all rockets and astronauts, Houston is a mix of cultures, Tex-Mex flavors, and incredible art!

You can stroll through Sam Houston Park to see historic Texas, catch a live jazz set downtown, or snap photos at the San Jacinto Monument. And the food? Texas BBQ and tacos are everywhere! Houston’s friendly locals and fun attractions make it worth leaving the airport with your family. Just be ready for that Texas heat, and a big, welcoming vibe that says, "Y’all come back soon!"

Things to keep in mind before leaving the airport

If you've googled Houston airports, you've seen that 15 airports come up, that's a lot! Most of them are private or military, so the only ones people use are George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). IAH is the main Houston airport and way more popular, so you'll probably be flying through that one. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about it, and if you can leave it and explore the city. So, keep reading for that key info!

Visa requirements in Houston

You might have heard about the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), it's a long list of rules and acceptions. Long story short, if you're traveling from these countries, you don't need a visa, just an ESTA. This system is super handy and keeps that pesky paperwork to a minimum! If you're not from a VWP country, you'll need to take the slower route and apply for a regular tourist visa at a US embassy. Good luck!

Minimum layover times in Houston

  1. In-airport short layover:
  2. Domestic flights: 45 minutes
Not leaving the US? That means a lot less red tape! You don't need any additional documentation, just an ID that's valid for at least 6 more months. You also don't need to worry about extra security checkpoints, passport control, or customs clearance. Just get ready for that TSA check and take everything out of your pockets, the lint can stay! If you're in a hurry, you can use the TSA PreCheck option before your first flight. And don't forget your boarding pass!
  3. International flights: 1-1.5 hrs
It's a big world out there, so if you're leaving or entering the US, they won't let you go that easy. Definitely make time for extra security checkpoints and customs. Remember to plan for those long lines that make you sweat. Before booking a connecting flight through Houston, check if there are any American holidays that day. Watch out for Thanksgiving day, it always means hoards of passengers at the airport. There are Terminals A, B, C, D, and E, and if you're arriving in the US, you'll go through D or E and head straight to immigration. You can use the Skyway Automated People-Mover train to get to your terminal.
  4. In-airport long layover: 3 hrs
How about that airplane food? If you're hungry but want to skip it, you can go to one of the many IAH airport restaurants. For some chicken, you can go to a classic Chick-fil-A. Or if you want an American sweet treat, you can try Dunkin' or Cinnabon. Delicious! If you need some quick shopping, the Wall Street Journal has electronics like emergency earbuds, books for the plane, gifts, and souvenirs for those loved ones back home. If you need a rest before your next United Airlines international flight, stop by an IAH airport lounge or catch a Harmony in the Air music show!
  5. Out-of-airport layover: 6 hrs
Do you need a change of scenery? Just hop on the METRO bus 102 and it'll take you to downtown Houston! The ride is about an hour so you'll need two hours in total to go to and from downtown. Aching to see all of Houston? You'll need at least a 6-hour layover to get a feel for the city! Read on for top spots to visit even if you're here the whole day!

Tips to make the most out of your time in Houston

Not clear on the details about the US? Catch some tips coming your way so you can feel like a local:

  • English is the main language, but you'll also hear a lot of Spanish too! Hustoun is full of hot blood thanks to the rich Hispanic and Latino culture!
  • Texas uses the US dollar ($), but you’ll often hear ‘bucks’ or ‘clams’ instead of dollars.
  • Houston is generally safe, but you should still look out for pickpockets at the spots on our list and at bus stops. You can call 911 for the police or an ambulance, and no prank calls!
  • Pack some cash if you're hungry, even budget meals aren't usually below $10. And budget hotel rooms will generally run you at least $80.

Our most valuable tip: try the local food! Houston's Tex-Mex style is something you'll remember and crave long after you leave! Share the new food experiences with your family, but you can't enter every restaurant with a bunch of luggage. So, remember Bounce partners around the city when you want to explore light!
