Bostonians were the pioneers of St. Patrick's Day celebrations in North America. This festivity, which honors the Patron Saint of Ireland, was first organized on March 17, 1727, by a group of Irish immigrants who settled in Boston and sought to support fellow Irishmen in the New World.

In 1901, the parade relocated to South Boston, a neighborhood with a strong Irish-American heritage. This neighborhood became the epicenter of the city's St. Patrick's Day festivities. Today, the South Boston Saint Patrick's Day Parade is a massive spectacle that sometimes draws even millions of spectators and celebrates the enduring legacy of the Irish in Boston.

This occasion gains additional importance as it aligns with Evacuation Day, a state holiday observed on March 17. The parade celebrates not only St. Patrick's Day but also this pivotal moment in American history, so this day is doubly meaningful for the residents of South Boston.

The annual South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade occurs on the Sunday closest to March 17. In 2025, the Saint Patrick's Day / Evacuation Day Parade will take place on March 16, starting at 1 pm.

What to Expect When Attending South Boston St. Patrick's Day 2025

Before the parade, you can attend the St. Patrick's Day Road Race, beginning at 9:30 am. This meaningful community event is a 5K race organized by the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club, which allows participants to run along the parade route.

The renowned St. Patrick's Day Parade route starts at the Red Line's Broadway T station. The parade proceeds along West Broadway, encircling Perkins Square, where the pathway slightly veers left and carries on down East Broadway. Marchers pass the South Boston Vietnam Memorial and Medal of Honor Park on their left before finally arriving at P Street, where the serene view of Pleasure Bay appears just a block and a half away, with Castle Island visible across the water—especially stunning when the sun shines. On P Street, the parade turns right, moves a short block, and then takes another right onto East 4th Street—essentially performing a U-turn back toward the city. 

Marchers proceed west along East 4th to K Street, where they take a left, walk two blocks, and turn right onto E. 6th Street until they reach G Street at Thomas Park, home to Excel High School and the Dorchester Heights Monument. The parade then circles around historic Dorchester Heights on Telegraph Street, makes a gentle left onto Dorchester Street, and continues west to Andrew Square, where it concludes.

No St. Patrick's Day parade is complete without the sound of bagpipes and drums filling the air. Expect performances from local and national marching bands, pipe and drum corps, and traditional Irish musicians playing classic tunes like Danny Boy and When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.

Expect mild temperatures and rain! A free shuttle service will operate between the Summer Street side of South Station and East 1st Street in South Boston.
