About the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse
One of Japan's most fascinating historical periods followed its reopening to international trade and relations, and the red brick buildings along the waterfront were instrumental in the rise of Yokohama Port in the 19th century. Much of the goods flowing through this Red Brick Warehouse (or Akarenga) helped modernize Japan and its new capital Tokyo.
While Japan’s ports have certainly modernized, you can still visit the complex of charming red brick buildings to learn about its history and take in some of the cultural delights that have sprung up when the shipping activity moved elsewhere. With surprisingly great restaurants (second floor) and shopping options (first floor), the Red Brick Warehouse district makes up one of the best areas in Yokohama to visit.
The Naka-ku area is especially great when the weather is lovely and you can walk around the waterfront admiring the passing boats. You’ll also enjoy wonderful views of the city from the Red Brick Warehouse, which is surpassed only by the neighboring Sky Garden at Yokohama Landmark Tower. It’s easy to reach through public transit, and if you’re heading there on a travel day you can stop by a Bounce Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse luggage storage facility to drop your bags off for a few hours.
