Colonel William Foster and his troops were at Fort Foster defending the land with a howitzer, 40,000 rounds of bullets and rifle powder, and 50,000 buckshot and ball cartridges. You can get a guided tour of Fort Foster on when booked on specific days. Or just go and enjoy the rest of what the park has to offer, which is plenty. Located in Thonotosassa, Florida, about 25 minutes from Tampa, Fort Foster is in Hillsborough River State Park, where there are more than enough activities to keep anyone busy for a day or even a week.
Take a hike on one of the four hiking trails that add up to over seven miles of exploration. Traipse through a dense cypress and hydric hammock forest, swamps, wetlands, and lush green flora where you’ll likely see lots of wildlife scurrying to get out of your way. Rent a canoe or kayak and paddle along the river. They even have some Class II rapids just past the bridge by Fort Foster. The Interpretive Center offers interactive exhibits and information on the history as well. And being just a short drive from Tampa, there are a plethora of other attractions nearby to enjoy.

Just 20 minutes to the southwest on USF Pine Drive, you’ll find the greenspace and vibrantly colored flowers on the campus of the College of Arts and Sciences at USF. About 35,000 people visit every year. Browse the gardens and see unique and rare plants as well as the wildlife that live there. Being in such a warm climate, there is always something blooming in the USF gardens. In the winter, you’ll find pink trumpet vine, lavender fringe flowers, golden chalice vines, and blue sage. During the rest of the year, you will see fruit trees, begonias, orchids, herbs, a butterfly garden, and much more.
