About USS Midway Museum
Located on Navy Pier in San Diego, California, the USS Midway Museum is an aircraft carrier turned into a museum. The museum is full of different aircraft with exhibits all over the ship. In fact, there are 60 exhibit areas, starting in the sleeping quarters all the way to the flight deck. You can see 30 restored airplanes, including the Bird Dog, the plane that worked to save refugees in 1975 when Saigon fell. And the T-2 Buckeye from 1959 trained thousands of pilots until it was replaced by the Goshawk.
The Battle of Midway Exhibit is also a great place to learn about the Midway history and see the SBD Dauntless, a bomber that sunk more ships than any other during WWII. Learn how to tie some sailor’s knots and see the giant anchor chains in the Anchor Chain Room. Below deck, see the chow line, chapel, wardroom, sickbay, and engineering.
On the Flight Deck, see 26 aircraft, including helicopters, attack aircraft, and fighters. You can also go up to the bridge and see where the captain steered the ship and led the flight operations. Learn how the pilots and other staff lived and played on the carrier. The interactive Meatball Exhibit shows how the deck crew used the Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System to help pilots land.
Fun Fact: You can watch the Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun” on the flight deck on Top Gun Movie Nights.
