Frankfurt has always been considered the most cosmopolitan of the German cities. With one of the largest financial sectors in Europe and a modern skyline seldom found anywhere in Europe, Frankfurt is reminiscent of places like Manhattan in ways that even London doesn’t manage. This is particularly the case in Innenstadt, which is the central district where the vast majority of the skyscrapers and corporate offices are situated.
That's not to say Frankfurt’s Innenstadt is some concrete jungle devoid of any cultural appeal. It’s a large swathe of land situated on the banks of the Main, with half a dozen or so distinct zones within it. Most notable is the Altstadt, this historic center of Frankfurt where some of the most beloved landmarks, like the Römerberg Square and Frankfurt Cathedral are situated. With the banking and financial sectors being so prevalent in Frankfurt, there’s also plenty of luxury shopping to be had, with the glitzy Zeil Street being the top destination.
Being at the center of everything, Innenstadt is exceedingly easy to get to from anywhere in Frankfurt and beyond. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is situated in the Western portion of the district, making Innenstadt your first stop when taking the train from other German or European cities. The S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and tramway all have multiple stops in the district. It’s also reasonably well-connected with the airport.
In general, it’s not hard to find secure luggage storage locations in Altstadt, but there aren’t any “official” lockers offered by the city. Instead, you’ll want to look into luggage storage services that operate locations within Altstadt. These aren’t very difficult to find, especially if you use a service like Bounce. Bounce’s luggage storage network operates dozens of locations in Frankfurt, including multiple in Altstadt near the top tourist hotspots.
It will depend on the train station. Larger stations like Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof will offer a full suite of amenities, including storage lockers. Smaller ones, like many U-Bahn subway stations, will not. It’s important to do your research before traveling to see which train stations you’ll be using. An easier way to go about this would be to use a luggage storage service with a mobile app like Bounce that will show you where the nearest locations are.
This can be one of the most secure ways to store bags anywhere, especially in Frankfurt. It’s not a bad idea to check with your accommodations to see if they will take bags and what to expect for luggage storage cost. It might be free! For example, the Hilton Frankfurt Airport offers this as a complementary service.
If you need to store the bags at a convenient location, Bounce has the best Frankfurt luggage storage facilities. With dozens in the Innenstadt area, including ones near the top travel destinations, you can conveniently store your heavy bags for a few hours while you’re exploring Frankfurt. There are plenty of features that make the whole experience a breeze. Bounce’s mobile app makes it easy to find and book luggage storage ahead of time or on the go. BounceShield Protection and 24/7 customer support all make using Bounce as easy and stress-free as it gets.
It should be noted that there are several parts of Innenstadt. The most famous is the Altstadt, which is the historic Old Town. This should be one of your top sightseeing destinations during your trip. The other areas are named for the industries which take place there.
Bankenviertel is the banking district that’s on the northern edge of Innenstadt. Opernviertel is the opera quarter (yes, Germans love opera enough to name a whole district after it) along Große Bockenheimer Straße. Zeil is the retail capital of Frankfurt, especially with the MyZeil shopping center. It’s pedestrianized for more comfortable shopping sprees. Gerichtsviertel is where numerous courts and legal offices are situated. Allerheiligenviertel and Fischerfeldviertel round out the district.
Getting between these areas is very simple, here are the best ways to get around Innenstadt:
Depending on where you’re trying to get to within the Innenstadt, it should take between 15 and 20 minutes to get from the airport via the S-Bahn S8 or S9 lines. They run throughout the day, so you won't have to wait longer than half an hour to board a train. A single ride costs only $4, which certainly beats out the $50 taxi or Uber into the city, which won't really save you much time.
One of the top landmarks in Frankfurt Altstadt is the imposing Kaiserdom. Translated to “imperial cathedral,” it’s aptly named, as the towers of this Gothic church were once the tallest in Frankfurt (before the dozens of modern skyscrapers were built to accommodate the financial sector).
The historical importance of the Kaiserdom can’t be overstated. Between the 14th and 18th centuries, the Holy Roman Emperors were elected and crowned here. The red-sandstone structure was bombed in World War II but was rebuilt to its former glory after the war and is a completely faithful restoration. You can tour the cathedral’s interior and even climb up the looming tower for epic views of Alrstadt and the Frankfurt skyline.
Any sightseeing visit to Frankfurt should start in the Altstadt. Any trek through the Altstadt should start (and perhaps end) at The Römerberg. Frankfurt's historic town square is a beloved open space surrounded by half-timbered buildings and leafy parks. It's been the center of the city for centuries, and it’s been the site of dozens of imperial coronations and important political ceremonies. It’s where the Frankfurt city administrators work, and it was one of the first places to be built back up after the destruction of the city in World War II.
While the square is beautiful any time of year, Römerberg frequently hosts the city’s events and festivals. If you’re traveling during the holidays, it’s where you’ll find the iconic Christkindlmarkt, the Christmas market where the square is turned into a makeshift winter village. The medieval Römer building is one of the city's most famous, and standing opposite it are the six half-timbered houses called the Ostzeile. These were the most important buildings to be built after the war, and their careful recreation of the original Medieval buildings is incredibly impressive.
One of the most celebrated opera houses in Europe, this Renaissance-style venue dates back to the 18th century and frequently hosts renowned ballet, orchestral, and opera performances throughout the year. While the best way to experience it is by taking in a show, you can tour the venue and its attached museum and admire its statues of icons like Goethe and Mozart.
This impressive museum has more than 10,000 exhibits ranging from deep sea research to the Big Bang. It’s one of the largest museums in Europe, but what you'll remember the most about Senckenberg Museum is its collection of monumental dinosaur skeletons and fossils. This one is absolutely for the kiddos.
The museum prohibits larger items and luggage for security purposes, but it does offer a cloakroom and some highly limited locker spaces in the basement.
Whether you’re traveling to Frankfurt on business or here to see the glorious Römerberg and Altstadt, you’ll want to be as mobile as possible on your trip. With public transportation being your top way of getting around, you won’t want your bags getting in the way of sightseeing or distracting you during that presentation. Of all the luggage storage options Frankfurt has, Bounce has easily the best features and locations. It’s hardly a Frankfurt thing, if you’re heading to Berlin, Munich, or anywhere else in Germany, you can rely on Bounce to take care of the bags.
