About Khao San Road
Known locally as Khaosan Road, this short street has more energy, fun, and culture packed into one small area than most cities have. Constructed in 1892, the name Khao San means milled rice, and the street was known for its major rice marketing in the past. However, it is now one of the most popular streets in Bangkok. Nicknamed the backpacker ghetto, the street has very inexpensive hotels as well as cheap food and lots of alcohol.
The shops that line Khao San Road sell all sorts of goodies like books, DVDs, CDs, food, clothes, and handcrafted items. The street vendors make up most of the retail sales on Khao San Road, and you can find just about anything you want there. After dark, you will find the other side of tourism with music, bars, and exotic snacks.
Nowadays, the street has morphed into several streets with bright lights and loud music at all hours of the day and night, where you can get a drink, meal, and massage for less than 20 bucks. And pop into one of the shops or stalls for a tattoo while you are there. Whatever you do, have fun and be alert for those annoying vendors selling fake IDs.
Fun Fact: One of the hotels was used in the movie “The Island” starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
