Where to go shopping in Vienna
Does it make any sense to say that Vienna was once off the beaten path? This is the capital of modern Austria, after all, and before that, it was the capital of the colossal Austro-Hungarian Empire that spanned much of the European continent before collapsing after World War I. When it comes to international tourism, although Vienna always had its fans, it didn't attract the crowds of comparable cities like Paris and London.
Anyway, those days are over now. This city of incredible history, beautiful architecture, and classical music is now very much on the radar of visitors from around the world.
And it's a favorite among shoppers, too.
In the beautiful streets of central Vienna, you'll find all kinds of high-end stores, representing major international fashion houses or more local designers. But dig a little deeper, and you'll also find that the retail scene has room for independent artisans, specialty shops, and beautiful Christmas markets among the famous shopping streets of the city centre. Plus, Vienna's art scene is almost as internationally renowned as its music, so whether you're looking for luxury brands or something unique to hang on the wall, you can easily find it here.

Shopping in Vienna, like just about everything else in the city, seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern elegance. Depending on where you go, you can explore North American-style shopping malls, the gleaming glass windows of the world's luxury brands, or charming art galleries where you'll find something truly unique. Plus, there are street markets and food stalls to explore while visiting Vienna that will give you a completely different experience of shopping in the Austrian capital.
Shopping architecture
Vienna’s shopping districts feature elegant streets lined with luxury boutiques, grand department stores, and quaint artisan shops. Kärntner Straße and Graben are the city’s premier shopping streets, while areas like Neubau boast a vibrant indie and artisan scene.
Opening hours and seasonality
Most shops in Vienna are open from 9 AM to 7 PM, with shorter hours on Saturdays and closures on Sundays, except for stores in the train station and airport. Seasonal markets, especially during the Christmas season tend to be open a bit later and, in the case of Christmas markets, open every day. Be aware, though, that most of Vienna's Christmas markets do not open until December 1, and they close on December 24. So unlike other Christmas markets around the world, you won't be able to shop at these famous markets after Christmas Day.
Pricing and bargaining
Prices in Vienna are generally fixed, particularly in boutiques and department stores. Don't embarrass yourself by trying to quibble over the price at a fashion boutique or art gallery, because they would rather not sell anything at all than change the price. For unique finds, such as antiques or handmade crafts in markets, light bargaining may be acceptable. However, don't be too pushy. Remember that market traders need to make money too, and haggling is not a big part of Austrian culture.
If you want to save money, look out for end-of-season sales in January and July for great deals. Be aware, though, that Vienna is by no stretch of the imagination a cheap city to visit. If you want bargains, this is not the place to come. But if you want exquisite products that will remind you of one of Europe's most elegant cities, you're in luck.
Shop like a local
Carry reusable bags to align with Vienna’s eco-conscious values. These days, most stores have gotten rid of plastic bags entirely, and if you want a reusable fabric bag, it will add to the cost of your shopping. Austria uses the euro, and while credit cards are accepted in many places around the city, especially the flagship stores of major brands, having cash for smaller vendors is recommended. Like neighboring Germany, Austria is still a place where cash is king.
Vienna’s efficient public transport makes navigating its shopping districts a breeze. The Metro can get you across the city reliably and cheaply, so you can visit multiple shopping areas and sample everything they have to offer.
