Things to keep in mind before leaving the airport
London Heathrow Airport is large and, like any other airport, can be confusing. We're here to help you during your stay and tell you the things you should know about the airport before you decide to leave it. Take a look!
Visa requirements in London
If you want to leave Heathrow Airport you’ll have to apply for a visa before travelling. It gives you 48 hours out of the airport. If you're from a country that does not need a UK visa, you will need the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). Their website has info on whether you need it and how to apply.
Minimum layover times in London
- In-airport short layover:
You can pre-book the Fast Track so you don't have to wait in the security check line if you're in a hurry. They cost £12.50 per person and have to be booked 2 hours before your flight. You could have automatic access to the Fast Track if you're a frequent flier or in the premium class. All connecting passengers have to go through security checks, so plan for that. - Domestic flights: 1 hr
Heathrow Airport is pretty large and popular, so everything takes longer than expected. You can use e-Gates if you have a biometric symbol on the cover of your passport. It's an automated system that speeds up security checks. You can also download the Heathrow app for estimated wait times! - International flights: 2-3 hrs
If you've booked two separate flights that aren’t technically connecting, you'll have to go through immigration too. In that case, plan for at least 3 hours. Passport control and going to another terminal take time, so you should account for that. Free shuttle buses and trains go every 10 minutes. If you have goods to declare, go through the red channel at customs; if not, use the green channel. - In-airport long layover: 3 hrs
If you have only a few hours between flights and no visa, the airport has enough options to keep you occupied! All terminals have a bunch of restaurants and cafés to choose from. From vegetarian and vegan to chicken and beef, they have everything you're in the mood for. Need a last-minute shopping spree for an important interview? Heathrow Airport has a bunch of clothing brands, and even a stylist-trained shopping assistants to help you out! The airport has two types of lounges in all 4 terminals.
