Things to do Near Tucson Airport
If you have a long layover and don’t want to just hang out in the airport, there are many things nearby to see. Or maybe you have already explored the airport and still have free time before your flight. Whatever your reason, it will be fun to get out into the city of Tucson, where it is almost always sunny and warm. Don’t miss some of these places during your visit.
- Try your luck at the Desert Diamond Casino on South Nogales Highway, just two miles to the northwest. Or try one of their restaurants for some great food and drinks.
- Watch some racing at the Arizona Motorplex. Even if there is no racing going on, they have some really cool things to look at. It’s just a few miles away on East Los Reales Road.
- Visit the 390th Memorial Museum on East Valencia Road about eight miles to the northeast. They have some excellent WWII info along with stories of the 390th Bomb Group personnel.
- Head about five miles to the west on San Xavier Road, where you can find the Mission San Xavier del Bac. This stunning old church was built in 1797 and is a sight to behold. It is an excellent place for some selfies.
- Take a walk in Kino Environmental Restoration Park about six miles to the north on Country Club Road. They have a 2.2-mile trail where you can see all types of birds and other wildlife.
- The Reid Park Zoo on East Zoo Court about 12 miles to the north is the perfect place to spend a few hours. See dozens of species, including tigers, lions, and bears.
- Right across from the zoo on Tumamoc Hill, the 860-acre Tumamoc Hill Preserve has a 2,500-year-old village to explore. Watch out for the horned lizards.

- Sabino Canyon Recreation Area: Approximately 22 miles to the northeast on Sabino Canyon Road, this park is fantastic. Shadowed by the Santa Catalina Mountains, you can find riparian corridors along the Sabino Creek. You may even get to see some Gila monsters and other desert animals. - Colossal Cave Mountain Park: Just about 27 miles to the southeast on East Old Spanish Trail in Vail, the Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a gorgeous place to spend an hour or two. Whether you want to explore the cave, walk a trail, enjoy the animals at the petting zoo, or just sit and enjoy the scenery, you can do all that here. Just be sure to leave your bags at one of the Bounce sites in town first.
- Dorado Golf Course: If you enjoy golf, head to the Dorado Golf Course about 16 miles away on East Speedway. Drop your luggage with Bounce first, and rent some clubs from the Dorado Country Club. Then, head out on the greens for a round of 18 holes. With the Catalina Mountains in the background, you will love the views.
- Morris K. Udall Park and Recreation Center: If you aren’t into golfing but enjoy the outdoors, the Morris K. Udall Park is a fantastic place to spend some time. You can play a game of horseshoes, take a walk on their track or one of their trails, or head inside the center for some racquetball or billiards. Make sure you leave your luggage with Bounce first.
- Dining: Tucson has a wide variety of restaurants near the airport to choose from if you cannot find what you want inside.
