Taranto is one of the major cities of the Puglia region, Italy, and the capital of the province of Taranto. It lies on the Salento Peninsula on the northern inlet of the Gulf of Taranto, positioned around two large bays, Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo, hence its nickname, “the city of the two seas.”
The city owes its diversity of architectural styles to the numerous invasions it experienced throughout history.
