About Munich Olympic Stadium

Opened in 1972 as a venue for the Olympic Games, Munich Olympic Stadium, or Olympicstadion as it's known locally, has become a major part of the city's sports and entertainment infrastructure. With a capacity of around 70,000 spectators, the stadium has hosted some major sporting and musical events in the 50+ years since it was first opened.

The iconic tentlike awning of the stadium was revolutionary when it was built, and it remains a famous symbol of the city to this day. Munich's Olympic Stadium was also the home of legendary German soccer club Bayern Munich until the construction of the Allianz Arena for the 2006 World Cup.

These days, the Olympic Stadium is still used for soccer games, but it has also hosted other events like motor racing, athletics, and, in 2006, the Tour de Ski cross-country skiing championship, which saw the stadium filled with artificial snow to re-create outdoor ski trails in a way that spectators could enjoy.

The stadium is also famous for musical events and has hosted everyone from the Rolling Stones to Rihanna to Ed Sheeran.

With great connections to Munich Airport via Munich Central Station and Munich East Station, the Olympic Stadium remains a popular place to hold major events in this southern German city. Whether it's the reason for your Munich adventure or just another thing to see along the way, make sure you drop off your bags with local luggage lockers so you can store your luggage and travel light.

Munich Olympic Stadium bag policy

You won't find Munich Olympic Stadium luggage storage at the stadium itself. The bag policy at the stadium varies a little depending on the event, but in general, backpacks bigger than an A4 sheet of paper are not allowed. No matter what event you're attending, then, the best thing to do is take advantage of Bounce's Munich luggage storage locations near the stadium or in the city center to keep your belongings safely stored.

Are there lockers at Olympic Park?

Munich's Olympic Stadium is part of a larger Olympic Park complex. In the Olympia-Einkaufszentrum mall, you can find a left luggage storage that consists of small lockers that may meet your luggage storage needs. However, there aren't many lockers and they are quite small, so if you have a lot of bags or large items to store, you may be better off using the Bounce website to book luggage storage online so you can leave everything behind.

Are there luggage lockers in Munich?

The city of Munich has several options for storing luggage. For instance, you can find train station lockers at München Hauptbahnhof (the main Munich train station) and other S-Bahn stations throughout the city. While these storage lockers can provide a place to store luggage in a pinch, Bounce provides more convenient and more affordable luggage storage near the stadium.

What is the capacity of the Olympic Stadium in Munich?

The stadium currently has a capacity of 69,250 seats and 11,800 standing places. Several concert venues have been held here with capacities up to 77,000 depending on the layout used.

Is Olympia Stadium Munich covered?

The famous tent that sits on top of the stadium provides some coverage, but it only covers around half of the seats inside. So if you're attending an event on a cold or rainy day, remember to dress appropriately.

How to get to Munich Olympic Stadium

Although the stadium lies a little way outside the center of the city, it couldn't be much easier to get here to attend an event.

From Munich Central Station, you can hop on tram line 20, which runs directly from Munich train station to the stadium itself. Tickets cost up to four euros, and the journey takes around 35 minutes. This is probably the easiest and most convenient way to get to the stadium, and while the trams get crowded at busy times, that's only because it's the most popular option to get to the stadium from Munich Hauptbahnhof.

Alternatively, you can take the subway from the central station to Scheidplatz Sud, then take bus line 144 from there to the station. However, this will take at least 45 minutes and involves a transfer, so it really only makes sense to do it if you can't take the tram for some reason.

A taxi from the train station to the stadium takes around seven minutes without traffic, but if there's a major event on, expect it to take much longer.

From Munich Airport, the best thing to do is take the train directly to Moosach station. From there, you can take the subway line 3 to the stadium itself. This journey will take around an hour, cost you about €14, and requires a walk of approximately 20 minutes.

Things to do near Munich Olympic Stadium

SEA LIFE Munchen

The stadium is part of a large entertainment complex that features a lake, a tower, a swimming pool, and extensive parklands. But probably the best attraction of Munich's Olympic Park other than the stadium itself is the SEA LIFE aquarium.

This family-friendly attraction allows you to take a journey under the waves and explore the rich and fascinating life that inhabits the seas and oceans of the world. The aquarium is divided into several theme areas including the Isar and Danube rivers and the Black Sea. The eerily beautiful jellyfish have their own enclosure, as do the pretty seahorses. Meanwhile, menacing sharks glide through the large tanks they share with stately stingrays.

Note that large bags are not allowed inside, and even bulky strollers may be banned at busy times. That's why it's a good idea to take advantage of a left luggage service like one of Bounce's secure locations so you can explore Munich hands-free, knowing your belongings will be waiting for you to pick them up once you're done.

How to get to SEA LIFE Munchen

If you're already visiting the stadium, it couldn't be easier to get to SEA LIFE. The two attractions are less than one km apart, so you can walk from one to the other through the park in around 10 minutes.

BMW Welt

Just outside Munich's Olympic Park, you'll find one of the top attractions in the city.

BMW Welt, or BMW World in English, is more than just a museum. Dedicated to one of the world's most famous brands, BMW, this attraction tells the story of this famous brand and the huge impact it has had on the city it calls home.

Inside, you can see classic cars by this legendary automaker, from the earliest vehicles up to today's supercars. You can also take a BMW for a thrilling test drive in the virtual reality simulator. And perhaps best of all, it's totally free to visit - although if you fall in love with a particular model of car while you're there, you'll need to have a very good relationship with your credit card company if you want to bring it home.

How to get to BMW Welt

From Munich Olympic Stadium, you can reach BMW Welt with a walk of around 15 minutes. BMW Welt is also right next to the Olympiazentrum subway station, making it extremely easy to reach from the city center, too.
