About Krabi Airport
One of Thailand’s most underrated beach destinations, the Krabi region flies under the radar for some international travelers, especially when compared to nearby Phuket. But of all the beaches in Southern Thailand, the ones clustered around Krabi Town are by far some of the most beautiful. The smaller crowds and more remote resorts make for a wonderful getaway for families and honeymooners, and the coastline along the Andaman Sea is lined with perfectly sandy beaches and eye-catching limestone cliffs. It certainly makes for a worthy destination to strand yourself and turn off the work emails for a few days.
Outposts like Ao Nang and Railay Beach are the two busiest hot spots, but you can head further afield with the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Ngai, Koh Kradan, Koh Muk, and Koh Lipe being some of the most exotic locales in Southeast Asia. Further inland, there are plenty of hiking spots and there’s even rock climbing at a few of the beaches. Of course, there are more than a few historic temples to visit, and even some geological marvels to admire.
Krabi International Airport is the primary way international tourists reach the region. It’s situated about 10 miles outside of Krabi Town (the commercial and cultural center of Southern Thailand) and is one of the busiest airports in the country. It’s still a small airport when compared to most international airports, but it’s still a perfectly serviceable transportation hub, and it’ll get you to the beach because you didn’t fly halfway around the world to enjoy the airport amenities. Transportation is relatively straightforward for getting to your beach destination, and it’s an extremely affordable airport to fly in and out of.
What connecting flights can I take to get to Krabi?
Krabi Airport offers mostly domestic service, being a small airport, but there are a few international flights as well. There are domestic flights to Krabi daily from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui via Thai Airways, Thai Smile, Bangkok Airways, and AirAsia. A great deal of international traffic comes through these flights as most international tourists make a connection at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. There are also a few direct international routes, including flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, and Copenhagen.
Can you store your luggage at Krabi Airport?
There aren’t traditional storage lockers at Krabi Airport, but there is a bag drop desk at the arrivals hall. This is probably not that useful, considering there aren't any layovers at Krabi Airport. Still, it’s an option if you’re also traveling to Bangkok and have more luggage than you’ll need for your stay at a beachside resort.
Where can I store luggage in Krabi Town?
If you need to store the bags for a few hours while you poke around this charming city, you’ll have a few options. Nearby hotels will almost always take your bags for a few hours, even before check-in. Nap Krabi Hotel, for example, will take luggage for travelers who are already checked out of the hotel. One option that won't be available is lockers and cloakrooms at museums or landmarks. The same goes for most transit facilities.
The best option has to be a dedicated luggage storage service like Bounce, which has dozens of convenient locations throughout Krabi. A Bounce left luggage facility will not only provide a convenient location, but also a friendly face in the form of a local attendant, and there are plenty of useful features. Bounce vets each location to ensure quality and security. There’s also 24/7 support along with BounceShield Protection that ensures a stress-free experience.
How to get to the city from Krabi Airport
Bus
The airport bus service is actually a solid option for those who want to save a few bucks. It runs from Krabi Airport to the center of Krabi Town and takes about 20-30 minutes. It only costs $3 to ride and is generally a comfortable experience. You can board the bus from the arrivals area at either terminal.
Taxi and private transfer
Taxis are incredibly affordable in Thailand, with a ride into Krabi Town costing between $10 and $20. It’s important to note that these fares should be agreed upon before the ride starts to avoid awkwardness and miscommunications down the line. These are still an option for reaching resorts, but arranging a private transfer is a better option because the driver will have the directions and information ahead of time.
Hotel shuttle
This is by far your best option if your accommodations are located up the coast. Most Of the resorts are situated west or south near Krabi’s main beaches, and many of these offer shuttle service to Krabi Airport. Check with your accommodations ahead of time to arrange a pick-up, it’ll only make your logistics easier and more enjoyable.
Rental car
There are plenty of national car rental companies along with some familiar international companies operating out of Krabi International Airport. It takes about 20 minutes to drive into Krabi Town, and there won't be much traffic if you’re heading to some of the more remote resorts along the coast. That doesn’t necessarily make it your best transit option. Road conditions and navigation can be a challenge, especially getting to some of these resorts. Parking and traffic in Krabi Town are also challenging for most international drivers. Rental cars in Thailand are affordable when compared to other countries, with a car costing as little as $50 per day.
Things to do near Krabi Airport
Wat Tham Seua
With the totally badass name of ‘Tiger Cave Temple,’ this hilltop complex is understandably a popular destination for both tourists and religious travelers taking a pilgrimage. Situated a few miles north of Krabi Town, arranging a taxi or tour bus from the city is the easy part. Wat Than Seua is perched atop a steep hill marked with a cave network and is only accessible from the 1,200-step staircase up the densely forested jungle slopes. It takes about 40 minutes of grueling cardio, but it’s worth it.
This temple is lined with unreal views of the surrounding topography and coastline along with golden Buddha statues in seemingly every corner of the temple grounds. Once you’re done admiring the temple, head outside to explore the surrounding limestone caves, where you’ll find (you guessed it) more golden Buddha statues and shrines. While you should certainly dress for a hike up the hill, you should be mindful that this is a place of worship and have the appropriate clothing.
Shell Cemetery
Easily the top attraction that’s not a temple dedicated to the Buddha, this geological phenomenon consists of hulking slabs of rock filled with millions of fossil shells. It’s estimated that these are over 75 million years old, and the vast quantity of these shells makes for a mesmerizing sight.
Without going into extreme detail, these shells have been compressed together for millions upon millions of years to create these cohesive slabs. Science enthusiasts absolutely love this place, and it breaks up the near-constant temple visits. These are only visible for surface-dwelling tourists because of the shifting tectonic plates that raised the limestone up to the coastline. There’s a small visitor center with information, knick-knacks, and refreshments. It's a tad touristy, but it’s absolutely worth a visit, especially if you find melting in the sun or staring at Buddha statues monotonous.
Wat Kaew Korawaram
Situated right in the heart of Krabi Town, this Buddhist Temple sits atop a hill overlooking the rest of the city. It’s easy to reach from the plaza below, with an opulent staircase lined with sculptures (it’s hard to miss from street level) leading up to the temple. It’s Krabi Town’s largest temple, and while its fame pales in comparison with Wat Tham Suea’s Tiger Cave Temple, it’s still worth a stop if you’re exploring the city.
