Dublin can be a difficult place to bring children. The city’s history is so complicated that many of the best landmarks are wrapped in tragedy and conflict. The dining scene can be a challenge to navigate. Dublin’s nightlife scene (although truly one of the world’s greatest) isn’t always suitable for the kids, especially Temple Bar at certain hours. It’s still possible to put together a serviceable itinerary for the kiddos and you’ll certainly need to keep them engaged.
All of those concerns end when you reach Phoenix Park and discover the Dublin Zoo. The zoo dates back to the 19th century and has been going strong as one of Europe’s oldest. Across 70 acres, you’ll get to admire more than 400 species in world-class facilities. There are specific exhibits like the South American House and Sea Lion Cove that do a marvelous job simulating the natural habitats of the animals, making it a surreal experience stepping out into the Irish weather. Phoenix Park itself is worth visiting as it provides the perfect setting for the kids to let off some steam.
If you’re visiting Dublin Zoo and need to find luggage storage, Bounce has plenty of locations nearby along with key left luggage facilities in Dublin's city center. You’ll have an easier time dropping the bags off with Bounce than dealing with security and lockers at the zoo, and Bounce’s online booking and mobile app are great for tech-savvy travelers.
The zoo is situated in the heart of Dublin’s Phoenix Park, which is located near Dublin city center. Phoenix Park is incredibly easy to reach because of its proximity to Heuston Station, which provides both long-distance and local connections to trains, trams, and buses. It's also within a 30-minute walk of the majority of the city center, but you may want to save your steps for exploring the zoo.
If you're renting a car to explore the Irish countryside and reach other cities, the Dublin Zoo is not a bad stop on your way in or out of town. There's no parking directly at the zoo but the nearby Cricket Grounds car park (parking lot) is situated within a short walk of the entrance along with street parking on North Road. Parking is limited so you may want to plan ahead or get an early start.
From Connolly Train Station, you can take the Red Line tram to the Phoenix Park stop and walk or hop on the #99 bus to reach the zoo’s entrance. The other primary train station in the city is Heuston Station, which is right across the street from Phoenix Park. It’s a 20-minute walk to the entrance of the park from there.
The Luas are Dublin’s tram network consisting of two lines intersecting at Heuston Station just outside of Phoenix Park. It's about a 20-minute walk to the zoo.
The bus network is a great way to quickly get around Dublin’s city center, especially if you’re already spending a lot of time on your feet.
It takes just under an hour to get to Dublin Zoo from the airport via the Dublin Express Bus running from Terminal 1 to Dublin Heuston. You can either walk or take the #99 Bus to the zoo entrance.
A trip to the zoo certainly requires some planning, especially if you're bringing the kids. So don't get stuck trying to squeeze the whole family and your luggage into the Dublin Zoo. Drop the bags off with Bounce to make the whole experience a breeze!
