All about Venice Marco Polo Airport

With its narrow canals and architecture that's had the absolute bare minimum amount of modernizing, Venice is one of the most distinctive places on the planet. Across 128 islands in the Venetian Lagoon, travelers can enjoy an inimitable atmosphere while taking in the finest of Italian culture and history.

Throughout the decades, Venice has enjoyed prominent depictions in movies and TV shows, which explains why it's a bucket list destination for practically anyone. The Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, and Doge’s Palace are all reached by gondola, as are accommodations. The Venetian canals are so ubiquitous that any other city with a canal network becomes known as “the Venice of (insert place).”

Depending on your travel itinerary, you'll likely either take the train into Venezia Mestre Railway Station or fly in through Venice Marco Polo Airport. The airport, situated on the mainland, is easily reached from the city center by water taxi or a short bus ride. For travelers looking to explore as soon as they touch down, our luggage storage service has convenient locations near the airport and major attractions in central Venice. Store bags with us at a convenient location and you can do even more on a layover or a short trip.

How to use Venice Marco Polo Airport luggage storage

  • Check-in with the attendant using your confirmation. Because you pay online, drop-off and pick-up will be completely cashless and quick.

How to get from Venice Marco Polo Airport to the city

Venice’s most iconic travel district is located on the lagoon, with the airport situated on the mainland. Still, it’s very quick to get from the airport to the top attractions and hotels via public transit (spoiler: this includes the iconic Vaporetto water taxis).

Train connections from VCE to the City Center

Venice has two main train stations, one on the mainland and one situated at the gateway to the islands. Both are easily reached from the airport by bus.

Water taxi from VCE

You can take the iconic Vaporetto water taxis directly from Venice Airport into the city, but they cost between $150 and $200. If you're willing to splurge and ride in style into the city, you can book a water taxi right at the arrivals hall.

Bus terminal from VCE to the City Center

The airport is served by a number of bus lines used to reach the city or other transit facilities. You can take the ‘Centro’ exit at the arrivals hall to find the bus stand.

  • Line #5: Venezia Mestre Train Station (25 minutes)
  • Line #15: Venezia Santa Lucia Train Station (30 minutes), Ponte della Costituzione (35 minutes), Piazzale Roma (35 minutes)

Points of interest

  • Piazza San Marco: St. Mark’s Square is the bustling center of Venice, and you can take the #5 bus from the airport to Venezia Station and then hop on the water bus (vaporretti) to the square. The journey will only take 45 minutes and it provides exactly the enchanting experience you’re traveling to Venice for. It's busy here, so it's a good idea to store luggage in advance.
  • Doge’s Palace: Palazzo Ducale is the epitome of the Venetian Gothic architectural style and a must-visit. It takes an hour to get there via the #5 bus into Venezia Station and the 5.1 Vaporetti will take you the rest of the way.
  • Venice Mestre Railway Station: This is the city’s main hub for long-distance trains and is easily reached in 25 minutes via the #15 bus directly from the arrivals terminal.
