About Madrid Airport

The political and cultural capital of Spain, Madrid is one of Europe's top travel destinations. These historic streets are lined with tapas bars and its nightlife scene can be compared to Berlin and Barcelona. The seat of Spain’s royal family and some of the most beautiful palaces and government buildings in the world make Madrid an architectural wonderland. There are also supremely gorgeous, gorgeous public parks like the Casa de Campo La Rosaleda de El Retiro for stretching your legs or putting together a lovely picnic.

Fittingly, Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe and the largest in Spain. It's situated outside the city center but is fairly accessible for business travelers and tourists. Depending on your itinerary, you may want to do some sightseeing between landing in Madrid and heading to your accommodations. The Bounce luggage storage service is by far the most convenient option if you need to find Madrid Airport luggage storage for a few hours.

How to get from Madrid Airport to the city

Madrid Airport is situated about eight miles outside of downtown Madrid. A taxi cab or rideshare is readily available and should take about 25 to 30 minutes to reach the city center, depending on your specific destination. Even at peak traffic times, you should get to your hotel or an attraction within 45 minutes, but these rides can be pricey. Fortunately, Madrid Airport is well-connected via public transportation.

Train connections from MAD to the City Center

There are two RENFE commuter rail lines running from Madrid’s train station, both of which run directly to the city center within 30 minutes. They leave about every 30 minutes from an underground station at T4 (accessible from other terminals via shuttle or a quick walk).

  • C1: This runs from the airport to downtown (stopping at Atocha Station) out to Príncipe Pío Station in the western part of the city.
  • C10: This line runs through downtown to Madrid Atocha Station and out to Villalba in northwest Madrid.

Metro lines from MAD to the City Center

The Madrid Metro Line runs directly from the airport to downtown.

  • Line 8: This is the fastest way to get to Central Madrid (25 minutes) and can be boarded from all terminals.

Bus transportation from MAD to the City Center

Madrid Airport has a few different bus lines running to various points of the city, including express routes and night services. These are generally the slowest ways to get to hotels and landmarks.

  • Airport Express Bus 203: This 24/7 service is the best bus option to reach the Atocha Train Complex in downtown Madrid as it takes 35 minutes and serves all terminals.
  • Bus #200: This route runs from the airport to Avenida de América (Madrid’s central multimodal station) in 40 minutes.
  •  Bus #101: This runs to Canillejas Station in 30 minutes.

Points of interest

  • Plaza Mayor: You can take the #8 Metro from the airport to Nuevos Ministerios Station and then transfer to the C4 Train to reach Plaza Mayor in about 40 minutes.
  • Santiago Bernabeu Stadium: To get to Real Madrid’s stadium you’ll take the #8 to Nuevos Ministerios Station, and hop on the #10 for a single stop to get to the stadium’s station. It takes 30 minutes.
  • Royal Palace: The metro will get you all the way to the Royal Palace in less than an hour, with #8 running from the airport to the #10 (transfer at Nuevos Ministerios Station).
