About the airport
One of Spain’s overlooked gems, Alicante offers a little bit of everything. Plenty of travelers, when given truth serum, will admit it’s the wonderful beaches and pleasant Mediterranean climate that bring them to Alicante. But sun and sand are far from the only draws for this charming city. Alicante boasts a very underrated history, with the mountain fortress of Santa Barbara Castle looming in the background.
Like so many other Spanish towns, there’s a charming maze of cobbled streets that represents the cultural heart of Alicante. The Barrio de la Santa Cruz’s patchwork of colorful houses and picturesque squares is the perfect way to take a break from the beach. There are stellar seafood restaurants and wine bars for the evenings, making Alicante a solid place for a romantic getaway.
Alicante Elche Airport (ALC) (full name: Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport) is one of Southern Spain’s major airports situated just outside of Alicante. It connects the Murcia and Alicante metro areas with cities around Europe, especially through low-cost airlines. It’s only about five miles southwest of downtown Alicante and provides easy access to both the city and the Costa Blanca region, which brings in millions of travelers every year.
While it’s by no means a massive airport, there are plenty of amenities like lounges, restaurants, and car rental services. With convenient connections via public transport, it’s a smooth experience getting in and out of the airport, which explains why so many travelers frequent the city and region. Here’s everything you need to know:
Can you store luggage at Alicante Airport?
The best option for luggage storage Alicante Airport has would be lockers located at the Floor 2 check-in hall. These are highly limited luggage storage facilities, with strict rules about how long you can keep your bags there. There aren't size limits, however the fee will differ. You’ll also need to book ahead of time. These luggage storage services are seldom used because the airport isn’t readily accessible from the city center, and almost no international travelers ever use Alicante Airport for layovers.
Are there lockers at Alicante Train Station?
While Alicante Terminal is the primary transit hub, it has highly limited amenities. These unfortunately don’t include luggage storage onsite. Fortunately, Alicante Terminal is located near plenty of other luggage storage options. The Estacion de Autobuses, which is situated just south of the train station near the waterfront, does have lockers onsite.
Where can you store luggage in Alicante?
Hotels might offer luggage storage services, but heading to your accommodations from the airport might not always work in the flow of your travel itinerary. Some museums, shopping centers, and public transit facilities will have luggage storage options, but these aren’t always reliable. Sometimes your best bet is the nearest luggage storage space. In this case, the best option for luggage storage in Alicante is a service like Bounce.

How to get to the city from Alicante Airport
- Train: The primary Alicante train station (known as Alicante Terminal) is located in the heart of the city center on Avenida de Salamanca and connects Alicante with other Spanish cities. It’s not directly connected to the airport, as you’ll need to take the C6 Bus and transfer to the 06 Train at Estación de Autobuses. This only takes about 50 minutes, but might not be the best way to get to your hotel or the numerous attractions in the city center.
- Bus: The Estacion de Autobuses is situated near the waterfront and functions as the primary Alicante bus station. With almost every major route running through its terminals, it opens up the rest of the city. The bus station is connected to the Airport via the C6 Express, which only takes 20 minutes and costs $4. The Centro area of the city, with all its charm, is only about a 10-minute walk from the bus station.
- Taxi and rideshare: This is one of the most common methods of reaching resorts and hotels along the waterfront, as these places tend not to be accessible from the bus or train stations. There will be taxis lined up at a dedicated stand in the arrivals area. A cab ride between the city tends to cost between $40 and $60 and will only take 20 minutes. Rideshare services are also available, with Uber being the most common.
- Shuttle: Depending on your accommodations, there may be a complimentary shuttle from the airport. This is most common with the luxury resorts along the waterfront.
Things to do near Alicante Airport
Castillo de Santa Bárbara
While you’ll be able to see this mountain and fortress from anywhere in Alicante, you’ll want to make the short trip to see the beautiful Santa Barbara Castle up close. Perched atop Mount Benacantil overlooking the city and waterfront, you can imagine this fortress’s strategic value during the various conflicts Spain was involved in. The fortress dates back to the 9th century when Alicante was part of the occupying Muslim Caliphate, which controlled Spain and Portugal for centuries. The fortress, in its present state, was completed in the 16th century and represents the pinnacle of defensive engineering for the time.
The defensive walls snake along the mountainside, making it seem impenetrable from every angle. One rocky side of the mountain resembles a face, which gives it the name of “The Face of the Moor” which is visible from most parts of Alicante. While it’s certainly a trek uphill, the views through the pleasant Parque de la Ereta will feel like a draw in itself. You can also take a taxi up to the castle or even take the funicular up from El Postiguet Beach. You can take guided tours of the castle grounds and even explore the interior and museum to learn its history.
Santa Barbara Castle bag policy
While there’s no bag policy associated with entry to the castle, the logistics of getting up the hill would make bringing luggage quite burdensome. There aren't any luggage lockers onsite, either. It’s much better to leave the bags in the city center!
Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA)
While art lovers won’t necessarily be booking a trip to Alicante just to see art, they’ll be surprised to find a perfectly serviceable modern art museum right in the city center. The wonderful Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante is set in a 17th-century mansion called the Casa de la Asegurada, and features some of the best Spanish art from the past few centuries. Names like Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Chillida, Sempere, and Tàpies are all represented in this extensive collection.
Head to the beach
The most popular beach in Alicante is the Playa del Postiguet. While it’s pleasant and has the Santa Barbara Castle in the background, its popularity is mostly due to its immediate proximity to the city center and port. For something more chill, check out the wonderful Playa de San Juan, which is further north from Alicante but immediately accessible via the tram. It’s only a 10-minute ride along the waterfront to the Costa Blanca Stop. From there, you’ll get to enjoy the lovely cafes and bars lining the beach.
Hit the Central Market (Mercat Central d’Alacant)
Like anywhere new, one of the best ways to get to know a place is by strolling through a market. One of the more charming and authentic parts of Alicante is its historic central farmer’s market near the boardwalk. There are some street food bites like some pastries or croquettes, but most of the items on offer will seem a little above the pay grade of a tourist. That’s because many of the restauranteurs in the city actually source their ingredients directly from local producers at the Central Market. Not to worry, if you want to put together a picnic, you’ll have plenty of cured meats and cheeses to choose from. The Iberian Jamon will be as good as it gets!
