About Fushimi Inari Taisha
One of the most important Shinto shrines in all of Japan, Fushimi Inari Shrine can be easily visited when touring Kyoto as it’s situated on the slopes of Mount Inari, itself a revered place, just outside of Kyoto’s city center. It’s easy to know when you’ve arrived as you’ll be greeted by the 16th-century Romon Gate marking the entrance to this sacred place. From there, you can tour the grounds, including the main hall and the rows of Senbon Torii (the apt but not necessarily literal "thousands of torii gates"). Other shrines are scattered around Mount Inari, including the Fushimi Inari Yotsuji and Ōiwa Ōkami Shrine.
There are frequent festivals and other events held at the shrine, and these can be once-in-a-lifetime experiences for lucky travelers arriving on the right day. For outdoorsy travelers, visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha essentially hits two birds with one stone. You’ll get to tour the shrine, but you’ll also have Mount Inari looming above which makes for an incredible hike. To reach the top, you’ll get to trek through beautifully tranquil terrain surrounded by dense forests and you’ll get there and back in about two hours.
Touring the grounds can be done in a single afternoon, and there are convenient public transit connections for reaching the shrine from Kyoto city center. With the terrain, it’s advisable to leave the bags back in Kyoto or a nearby Bounce Fushimi Inari Taisha luggage storage location to lighten the load.
