The first marathon in Amsterdam happened almost a hundred years ago, in 1928, as part of the Summer Olympics. It wasn't until 1975 that another race was held, making it the inaugural Amsterdam Marathon.

Since then, it has been held annually, and today it ranks fourth place as the fastest marathon city in the world!

This road race, which holds a World Athletics Platinum Label, starts on Sunday, October 20, at 9 am.

The route course is flat due to Amsterdam, one of the fastest marathon cities, being below sea level. The Netherlands is considered one of the flattest countries, making this marathon ideal for personal best times! The course has many highlights, with the start and finish in the Olympic Stadium.

The runners will pass by landmarks such as the Rijksmuseum and Heineken Experience. Then, the route will stretch along the Amstel River through the beautiful Vondelpark, offering a boost in energy with its stunning views.

What to Expect When Attending Amsterdam Marathon 2024

In addition to the full marathon (42.195 km), there is a half marathon (21.097 km) and an 8 km race.

All participants get a special medal after the finish line! Remember that the time limit for the full marathon is 6 hours, for the half marathon 3 hours, and for an 8 km race 1 hour.

There will be refreshment points throughout the venue.

The largest marathon weekend in the Netherlands starts on Thursday, October 17, offering four days filled with activities designed to give you a full marathon experience. Some highlights include the International Marathon Expo and the popular Good Morning City Run.

Additionally, there's also a special Kids Run scheduled for Sunday, with a fun route going through the Olympic Quarter. It's a fantastic way to channel your children's energy into a positive and exciting new experience!

How to Get To or From the Event

Amsterdam’s famous bike lanes make cycling the most convenient way to get to the Olympic Stadium.

If you don’t want to bike to the Olympic Stadium, you can use:

• Tram: Tram 24 from Amsterdam Centraal Station to the Olympic Stadium.
• Bus: Buses 62 and 347/357 will take you near the stadium.
