• Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 1 is the city’s oldest bus terminal and mainly serves local transport routes within the province of Chiang Mai. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see buses here. Instead, you'll find vans and songthaews or modified pickup trucks.

Since Chiang Mai doesn’t have one main bus station, it’s worth knowing that the other two terminals in the city will take you to other places in Thailand, including Bangkok.

• Arcade Bus terminal is popular among tourists, about 5 km from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 1. It serves long-distance express buses to various destinations in Thailand, like Phuket, Bangkok, Ayutthaya, and more.
• Wat Ket Bus Terminal is within walking distance of Arcade Bus Terminal. It’s the newest of the three Chiang Mai Bus Stations and houses the most bus operators in Chiang Mai. It’s a great starting point if you want to reach more destinations in other Thai provinces.

Alternative transport options

• The journey from the city center to Arcade Bus Terminal can take around 15-20 minutes by car. But the cheapest way to go to Chiang Mai Bus Station is by songthaew.
• Tuk tuk, a three-wheeled motorized vehicle, is another great option to get around the city. The driver can take you directly to where you want to be.
