About Old Québec
Old Québec is a historic neighborhood located in the Canadian city and province of the same name. Typically referred to as the “Old City,” the area is dedicated to preserving its multifaceted history that dates back over 400 years. The neighborhood is considered the heart of Québec City and is home to some of the region’s most famous historic landmarks and architecture, as well as modern cultural experiences such as shopping and dining. All that said, it should be no surprise that Old Québec is one of the most visited destinations in the entire province of Québec.
Old Québec is divided into two sections - the Upper Town (Haute Ville) and Lower Town (Basse-Ville). The Upper Town was initially chosen by French explorer Samuel de Champlain as the administrative and military center of the city, specifically because of its strategic location and defensive architecture. Meanwhile, the Lower Town is the site of the Place Royale and its harbor facilities. It is famous for several exciting attractions, including iconic streets, performance halls, museums and theaters, among others. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the city was surrounded by fortifications, which to this day, serves as the border that separates Old Québec from the rest of the city. While the area has undergone some major renovations throughout the years, most of its original architecture has been well-maintained, making Old Québec one the most successfully conserved walled cities in the world.
Fun fact: On December 3, 1985, Old Québec was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
