Attractions and Activities near Martim Moniz

  • Santa Justa Lift: Less than a 10-minute walk from Martim Moniz, the Santa Justa Lift is a unique transport option that doubles as a tourist attraction. Built during the 19th century, the lift carries passengers up one of Lisbon’s notorious hills towards Largo do Carmo. A fee is required to ride the elevator, but the viewing platform gives you sensational 360° views of Lisbon.
Stepping inside the lift transports you to the industrial age when a steam engine powered it to the viewing platform. The lift slowly rose above Lisbon’s lively streets by pumping water into tanks beneath the cabins before being replaced by an electric engine in the early 20th century. Its exterior architecture also resonates with its neo-gothic design and geometric shapes.
Given the viewpoint’s popularity, don’t be surprised to find long lines to ride the lift. Arrange your visit during the early morning or around sunset to avoid the large crowds that often cram into the decorative cabins.
  • Carmo Convent: Lisbon was rocked by an earthquake in 1755, and the ruins of this gothic church provide insight into its devastation. The former Catholic convent dates to the Middle Ages and once stood proudly as Lisbon’s largest place of worship.
Many sections of the church were completely destroyed, which jeopardized thousands of written texts. Upon the collapse of the stone roof, the nave became a shell of its former self. Only the arched columns survived the destruction caused by the natural disaster.
In the early 20th century, a team of architects accepted the task of restoring some of the convent’s former beauty. After completing work on the church’s façade and walls, another earthquake damaged the nave in 1969.
Fortunately, many relics escaped the earthquake unscathed, and are now inside the archaeological museum. Located in the church’s altar, visitors will discover tombs, mosaics, fountains, sculptures, and other ancient artifacts.
  • Castelo de S. Jorge:  Castelo de S. Jorge sits atop one of Lisbon’s hills and has witnessed centuries of Portuguese history. The protection of the hilltop dates to the 8th century BC and the structure has stood for thousands of years. Before the Portuguese solidified control of the fortification, the strategic grounds witnessed the rule of the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors.
The Siege of Lisbon conducted in 1147 was successful thanks to the courageous sacrifice of Martim Moniz. During the invasion of the castle, Moniz noticed the Moors attempting to close the doors, and he flung his body into the doorway to stop its closure. Moniz died during the siege, but this act secured his legendary status in Lisbon to this day.
Under Portuguese rule, Castelo de S. Jorge became a multi-faceted structure used as a palace, residence, and fortification. Dozens of walls and towers secured the city’s protection and helped the Kingdom of Portugal thwart future invaders.
